"Book to Action" Discussion:
Farm City
Monday, March 21st
Two meetings:
12 Noon at Peet's Coffee (B Street and Mission)
6:30 p.m. at Main Library
Join us for part one of the Library's first "Book to Action" program, which invites you to discuss a timely book, to be followed with an opportunity to volunteer for a local organization that implements the ideas you have read about. Meet with local community members to discuss Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer by Novella Carpenter, a charming memoir about running an urban farm in an abandoned lot in downtown Oakland. On her small plot, Carpenter not only grows a wide variety of vegetables, but also raises bees, goats, rabbits, geese, and other farmyard animals.
Meet Novella Carpenter, Bestselling Author of
Farm City

Sat., March 26

Don't miss the opportunity to talk about the Library's "Book to Action" selection with the author herself!

Book Discussion Groups
Mystery & Suspense - Locked InTuesday, March 1st @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission) In Marcia Muller's intense mystery thriller, San Francisco private eye Sharon McCone has been shot in the head by an unknown assailant and is "locked in" her body, unable to communicate with her frantic husband and her agency's employees, except by blinking her eyes. How she manages to help them expose the shooter as she works on breaking free of her paralysis makes a riveting and fascinating story with multiple twists and turns and a shocking ending. Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975. Mostly Literary Fiction - Lost City Radio Monday, March 14th @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library Set in a fictional South American nation where guerrillas have long clashed with the government, acclaimed Bay Area writer Daniel Alarcón's novel follows a trio of characters upended by civil strife. Imparting comfort while reading the names of missing people to her war-ravaged listeners, radio host Norma finds her life irrevocably changed when a young boy from a remote jungle village provides a connection to her long-missing husband.. Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information. Autobiography & Memoir - Crazy for GodWednesday, March 16th @ 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library By the time he was nineteen, Frank Schaeffer's parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer, had achieved global fame as bestselling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands in arenas around America, publish his own evangelical bestseller, and work with such figures as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. But all the while Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, precipitating a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his departure-even if it meant losing everything. With honesty, empathy, and humor, Schaeffer delivers a fascinating insider's look at the American evangelical movement and a deeply affecting personal odyssey of faith. Group is facilitated by Abbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941.
