Book Discussion Groups
Mystery & SuspenseTuesday, January 4th @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission) Agatha Christie introduces the delightful amateur sleuth Miss Marple and the charming English village of St. Mary Mead in the 1930 mystery novel, The Murder at the Vicarage, although Miss Marple had briefly appeared in some of her short stories. In this classic golden age cozy, elderly spinster Miss Marple has to figure out who really killed the despised Colonel Protheroe by using her talent for observation, local gossip, a strong sense of justice, and her ability to be overlooked! Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975. Mostly Literary Fiction Monday, January 10 @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library Kathryn Stockett's novel, The Help, has been a best-seller sensation since its publication in 2009, with a film adaptation to be released in the summer of 2011. In Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, there are lines that are not crossed. With the civil rights movement exploding all around them, three women start a movement of their own, forever changing a town and the way women-black and white, mothers and daughters-view one another. Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information. Autobiography & MemoirWednesday, January 19 @ 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library Anita Jain was fed up with the New York singles scene. After three years of frustration and awkward dates she decided to pursue an arranged marriage in her parents' native India. This turned into an endeavor marked by cultural perceptions about her age, an onslaught of nosy relatives, and dozens of potential husbands. With disarming candor, Jain tells the story of her own romantic quest and in the process sheds new light on a country modernizing at breakneck speed. Group is facilitated by Abbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941.
