The library is always looking for volunteers. There are many rewarding projects that need your help.  One of the programs is the Senior Outreach Service (SOS). Volunteers deliver library materials to people who can no longer get to the library to check out materials for themselves. Please call Trudy at (510) 881-7974 or email her at: trudy.toll@hayward-ca.gov if you are interested in providing seniors with this valuable service.

Literacy Plus is a learner-centered program providing tutoring to adults in the Hayward area in the areas of reading, writing, and critical thinking.  Based on each learner's needs, we offer individualized learning plans through one-on-one tutoring.  For tutors, we offer free training prior to volunteering.  Participants must register in advance and all sessions are required.  Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years old, able to commit 2-4 hours per week, and do so for a minimum of six months.

Tutor Orientations will be held on Monday, January 10, and Tuesday, January 18, from 6-8 pm, in the Main Library Meeting Room.  Attendance at one orientation is required.  Tutor Training will be held on two consecutive Saturdays: January 22 and 29.  Attendance at both sessions is required.

Call 510-881-7910 for more information. Help us break the cycle of illiteracy and promote a lifelong love of reading and learning!

Mystery & Suspense
Tuesday, December 7th @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission)
Wreck the HallsSarah Grave's fifth mystery in her "Home Repair is Homicide" series continues a fascinating cozy series with practical home repair advice starting each chapter. When ex-Wall Streeter Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree bought a charming 1823 fixer-upper in tiny Eastport, Maine, she figured she'd also bought herself a tranquil, stress-free life. But Jake soon learned that appearances can be deceiving, and that even small towns have their share of dark secrets - including murder.

Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975.

Half Broke HorsesWe will be discussing Half Broke Horses, a "true-life novel" by Jeannette Walls. Many of you will be familiar with Walls' bestselling memoir, The Glass Castle, a publishing sensation around the world. Half Broke Horses tells the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls's no-nonsense and resourceful grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town-riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job.

Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and heartbreaking personal tragedy. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Jeannette Walls channels that kindred spirit.

Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information.
