Volunteer at the Library Volunteers
are a valuable resource at the Hayward Library, enhancing library
services by performing jobs not ordinarily handled by staff.
Sign up to volunteer by completing a Volunteer Application form at the
Information Desk at either library. You will be called to discuss your
schedule, interests, and talents to find a match with the tasks needing
attention.
Specific volunteer opportunities at the Library include:
Literacy Plus Tutor - provide free, confidential, one-to-one literacy tutoring to English-speaking adults who read below 8th-grade level. Senior Outreach Volunteer - select and deliver library materials to the homebound Hayward residents, involving one to two hours every two to three weeks. Friends of the Library
- involves a variety of activities, principally book sales to raise
funds for Library services, newsletter mailings, and promoting the
Library in the community. Student Friends
- in the spring and summer, students in Grade 7 and up help with the
Summer Reading Game or other library programs and projects. Other
projects for young volunteers may be available during the year. Special Projects - include light clerical work, washing books, special library service projects. Community Service Hours - volunteer hours needed for education-related community service credit are sometimes available. You may be on a waiting list before you are called. Volunteer hours for court-ordered community service credit are not available. Visit the Volunteering at the Library web page for more information.

Home Repair Help for Hayward Residents
The City makes grants and loans to help seniors and people who have disabilities maintain their homes to be safer and more comfortable. Examples of grant projects include installing bathroom grab bars and removing overgrown weeds. The City's loan program helps with larger projects such as roofing or installing energy efficient windows. Volunteer groups: we need partners to join us seasonally to pull weeds, prune bushes, and clean rain gutters for Hayward residents who are unable to safely maintain their homes. Hayward's Paratranist Shuttle Service
Announcing the Hayward Paratransit Program's new shuttle service! Riders who board at designated shuttle stops will ride FREE of charge. Registered riders may ride with attendants or companions. To ride Hayward Paratransit you must be a resident of Hayward, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo or the unincorporated areas of San Lorenzo and be 65 years or over or a person who has a disability. Wednesdays October 13th & 27th 6:45 p.m. Main Library Discover the joys of knitting! All skill levels welcome. Please bring size 10 or 10 1/2 knitting needles and the yarn of your choice. Experienced knitters Zanaib Green and other knitting circle members will start off new knitters on projects, guide returning knitters on their projects, and help experienced knitters solve their tricky problems. There will also be a prize drawing for knitting supplies including yarns, needles, hooks, bags, etc. Tea, coffee, water and assorted pastries and cookies will be served.
