Book Discussion Groups
Mystery & SuspenseTuesday, September 7th @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission) and 6:30 - 7:45 p.m., Main Library In Lisa Lutz's first mystery novel, The Spellman Files, we are introduced to the amazingly dysfunctional Spellman family of private investigators who live and work in San Francisco. Isabel Spellman, the eldest daughter, narrates the increasingly bizarre and hysterically funny adventures of the various family members as they both investigate cases for their clients and equally enthusiastically investigate each other, for to be a Spellman is to snoop on a Spellman, tail a Spellman, dig up dirt on, blackmail and wiretap a Spellman. Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975. Mostly Literary Fiction Monday, September 13th @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library We will be discussing Old Filth by British novelist Jane Gardam, who has twice won the Whitbread Book Award and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Award. Filth is a lawyer with a practice in the Far East. A few remember that his nickname stands for Failed In London Try Hong Kong. But Old Filth is not as pompous as people imagine, and his past contains many secrets and dark hiding places. Described by The New Yorker as "mordantly funny," Old Filth, Gardam's 15th novel, was shortlisted in Britain for the Orange Prize. Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an
account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information. Autobiography & MemoirWednesday, September 15th @ 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Main Library In When I Was Puerto Rican, Esmeralda Santiago tells of a childhood in Puerto Rico full of both tenderness and domestic strife, a childhood bursting with tropical sounds and sights. And mired in poverty. When her mother decides to take off for New York with her seven-soon to be eleven -children, Esmeralda, the oldest, must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually a new identity. Discussion facilitated by Abbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941.
