Saturday, August 21st
1:00 pm.- 4:00 p.m.
Main Library
Denise Michelle Harris, author of the novel Sweet Bye-Bye, resumes her free writer workshop series. Writers are often told to "show" not "tell" - to help readers witness a scene for themselves, rather than having it summarized for them. Denise will lead workshop participants in exercises from Chapter 5 of The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante: "Why You Need to Show and Tell."Unleash your creativity in this hands-on, supportive workshop! Participants can choose to work on the exercises before class, and, time permitting, will have the opportunity to share excerpts from their writing with other workshop participants. Advance registration required - call 510-881-7980 to sign up. For more information, or to obtain the writing exercises, contact Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700.

Someone Knows My NameWe will be discussing Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. Enslaved on a South Carolina plantation, Aminata Diallo works in the indigo fields and as a midwife. When she is bought by an entrepreneur from Charleston, she is torn from friends and family. The chaos of the Revolutionary War allows her to escape. In British-held Manhattan, she helps pen the Book of Negroes, a list of blacks rewarded for wartime service to the King with safe passage to Nova Scotia. During her travels in Canada, Sierra Leone, and England, Aminata strives for her freedom and that of her people - even when it comes at a price.

West of Kabul, East of New YorkThe day after Islamic terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center, Tamim Ansary of San Francisco sent an anguished e-mail to twenty friends, discussing the attack from his perspective as an Afghan American. That message, spreading via the Internet, reached and touched millions of people around the world.  Now Ansary gives us West of Kabul, East of New York, a moving account of a life lived in two very different cultures, Islamic Afghanistan and the secular West.
