A Village Called Versailles
Film Premiere: A Village Called Versailles
Tuesday, May 11th
6:00 p.m.
Main Library

Join us for a free Community screening of A Village Called Versailles, a full-length documentary about a community in eastern New Orleans first settled by Vietnamese refugees. After Hurricane Katrina, Versailles residents impressively rise to the challenges by returning and rebuilding before most neighborhoods in New Orleans, only to have their homes threatened by a new government-imposed toxic landfill just two miles away. A Village Called Versailles recounts the empowering story of how this group of people, who have already suffered so much in their lifetime, turns a devastating disaster into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future.

Join us for an afternoon tea with Tiffany Baker, author of the bestselling novel The Little Giant of Aberdeen County (the March 2010 selection of the Mostly Literary Fiction Book Group). In The Little Giant of Aberdeen County, Truly Plaice suffers constant abuse and humiliation for her enormous size. Publishers Weekly glowed: "It's got all the earmarks of a hit -- an infectious and lovable narrator, a dash of magic, an impressive sweep, and a heartrending but not treacly family drama." Tiffany Baker holds a graduate degree in creative writing and a Ph.D. in Victorian literature from U.C. Irvine. She lives in Tiburon with her husband and three children. The Little Giant of Aberdeen County is her first novel.

Naked in Death Naked in Death, the first of author J.D. Robb's futuristic police series, takes place in the year 2053.  New York City Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas seeks a murderer who kills prostitutes with old fashioned weapons: hand guns.  The first of three victims is the granddaughter of a prominent politician whose behind-the-scenes dealings makes it difficult for Eve to do her job.  Attracted to the lead suspect and dealing with her own history as a victim of sexual assault, Eve must solve the murder before she is thrown off the case.

A moving, funny, triumphant novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us.

Alex & MeThis month we will be discussing Alex and Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Uncovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence-and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process by Irene M Pepperberg. Over the 30 years they had worked together, Alex and Irene had become famous-two pioneers who opened an unprecedented window into the hidden yet vast world of animal minds. Over the years, Alex the parrot proved many things-he could add, he could sound out words, he understood concepts like bigger, smaller, more, fewer, and none. The story of their 30 year adventure is equally a landmark of scientific achievement and of an unforgettable human-animal bond.
Discussion facilitated by Abbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941.
