Independent Lens film:

Tuesday, October 27th @ 6:00 p.m. Main Library
Can you own a sound? As hip-hop rose from the streets of New York to become a multibillion-dollar industry, artists such as Public Enemy and De La Soul began reusing parts of previously recorded music for their songs. But when record label company lawyers got involved -
everything changed. Years before people started downloading music off
the internet, hip-hop sampling sparked a debate about copyright,
creativity and technological change, and the debate still rages today. This is a free public screening of Copyright Criminals, which will be aired on PBS in January, 2010. COPYRIGHT CRIMIINALS is a co-production of Benjamin Franzen, Kembrew McLeod and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The Emmy award-winning series Independent Lens is jointly curated by ITVS and PBS and is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) with additional funding provided by PBS and the National Endowment for the Arts.
