National Speed Skating Circuit
by Seabury MS student*
I enter the rink and take off for my warm up. As I skate around the track I look at the crowd hollering and cheering in excitement. People screaming and calling my name, the pressure is on. This is it. I am at Pattison's rink in Federal Way for the second edition of the NSC series. NSC stands for National Speed Skating Circuit in which the best inline skaters around the country compete in a series of races, but only one can be crowned champion. I am part of the Future Skaters where they take some of the top skaters in the region ages eleven through thirteen and let them race before the championship race of NSC. I am one of the five kids who are chosen to compete. I approach the start line and everything begins to slow. "To your marks," the ref announces. Everything goes silent and I begin to hear my own heart beat. "Get set." I feel sweat run down my face. Bang! The gun goes off and everything becomes a blur. The crowd screams as the five of us take off and fight for the first cone. I shoved my way into second as we all try to stay on our feet. The next straight away, I get put into third before passing into second on the next corner. About another lap into the race, we go into a corner that's surprisingly slippery and I hear a crash behind me. I hear the crowd screaming louder than ever and I know it's not good. In the corner of my eye, I see some other racers dodging the wreckage. I hold onto second until I pass the finish line. The crowd goes wilder than ever before. I have done it.

Recently, one of the Explorers competed in a hockey tournament at Sprinker Skate Center in Spanaway. QH*, is one of the Kent Valley Tornadoes, and that is what his team looks like on the ice. They swept the weekend tournament by winning all three of the games in their age group. Way to go! QH has been skating at Kent since his family moved to our area 3 years ago and is a great skater! *to protect our students, we will not put thier names in our newsletter. jsk

A Platinum Celebration!
The countdown continues with only 4 weeks left until the big day. We still need a few items for the auction. We need approximately 10 wine gift baskets, 15 restaurant gift certificates and about 10 desserts for the dessert dash (these can either be homemade or procured from a bakery). The work parties are scheduled for Saturday February 20th and Saturday February 27th from 9am - 4pm. We will need volunteers to shrink wrap baskets, data entry, place wine bottles into gift bags, write thank you notes, and create backboards for each of the silent auction items. Also, there are a block of rooms at the Hotel Murano for $139 for Saturday March 6th. We must book at least 10 rooms to guarantee the rate. If you would like to help with the work parties or questions regarding donating to the auction please contact Dawn Vitale or Margaret Jacobsen.
Wish Tickets are in the main office if you are interested in purchasing one. Be sure to get your invitations in. Purchasing a table and inviting friends (outside of the immediate Seabury community) to come and shop at the auction allows the funds earned to benefit the programs at Seabury and allows others to see what Seabury is all about. Contact Joslyn Kearns in the main office or Katherine Overton if you have questions about invitations or Wish Tickets.
