From the Head of Seabury School
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend parent-teacher conferences this week. We hope you came away with helpful information about your child's progress in school. Teachers have all commented about how much they enjoyed meeting with all of you, and about how valuable they found your discussions to be in terms of better understanding our students and addressing their needs. Be sure to let your child's teacher know any time you have questions or concerns. ***************************************************************

Seabury's Staff Loves to Learn
Last week, Seabury's teachers attended the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted (WAETAG) conference in Lynnwood. WAETAG always provides a wonderful opportunity for Seabury's teachers to network with others in gifted education across the state of Washington, and to learn more about effective tools for teaching gifted children. This year's keynote speaker, Bertie Kingore ( http://bertiekingore.com/), shared strategies for moving lessons to a higher level of thinking and engagement in order to better meet the needs of gifted learners. This week, several Seabury teachers already began to use some of the tools they learned from their workshops, and their insights and strategies are already impacting instruction at Seabury. It was a valuable day for all teachers and part of Seabury's commitment to providing ongoing professional development for our staff. Last Sunday and Monday, Head of School, Sandi Wollum and trustee, Lee Fisher, attended the PNAIS Institutional Leadership conference. The conference focused on 21st century education, as well as on strategies for improving governance in independent schools. Perhaps the most interesting session was Sunday's keynote speaker, Yong Zhao, Ph.D., University Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Michigan. Dr. Zhao is a native of China, and his work focuses on education in the age of globalization. He emphasized that for students to be prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century global economy, it is critical that they have the opportunity to cultivate their passions, discover and develop their talents, focus on creativity, and become globally competent. As Dr. Zhao described education for the 21st Century, Lee and Sandi were struck by the similarities between the program at Seabury and the attributes Dr. Zhao described. It was affirmation that Seabury's focus on developing individual strengths, on helping students discover and pursue their passions, and to express and explore their creativity are going to be key factors in their success in the world they will be living and working in as adults. Dr. Zhao's book, Catching Up or Leading the Way, American Education in the Age of Globalization, will be a topic of discussion for Seabury's faculty in the coming months. Encore Performance: Seabury Strategic Plan Presentation November 3
7 pm Seabury Middle School Campus
Back by popular demand! The chair of Seabury's Board of Trustees, George Oberhofer, and Head of School, Sandi Wollum, will offer a second opportunity for parents to attend a presentation regarding the long range strategic plan for Seabury adopted this summer. If you were not able to attend the first presentation, you are encouraged to attend this repeat performance! ********************************************************************************************** Help Wanted! Great Volunteer Opportunity!
Seabury is interested in starting a Destination Imagination program at both the lower and middle schools. DI is a creative problem solving competition that is a wonderful opportunity for students to work as a team, develop problem solving strategies, and express their creativity. Grace Oberhofer, Seabury alum and student at Tacoma's School of the Arts, has volunteered to coordinate Seabury's DI program and to coach a middle school team with the help of her mom, former Seabury DI coach and coordinator Jill Goodman. Now we need your help to make it happen! We are in need of several parents to assist with coaching at the middle school, and to coach a team for 3rd - 5th grade students at the lower school. If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved, you are encouraged to attend an information meeting on Friday, November 13 from 4:30 - 6 pm at Seabury's middle school campus. You can learn more about DI at www.idodi.org. |

Lastly, I am looking to borrow a couple of full size wine racks for our wine wall at this year's auction. If you have anything that might work or have a suggestion, please contact me. Thanks in advance, Margaret |

Have you met Madame Olliphant? During my first year at Seabury, it took me about 5 months before I knew who the French teacher was. I just knew that my daughter was coming home and saying "oui" to me (which is better than "no"!) Stop in on Wednesdays and Fridays to meet Madame-you may even pickup a few words in French! She also leads our Gatherings on the lower campus on Friday and, of course, all families are welcome to attend.
