Preparing for Conferences

In the coming weeks, Seabury's parents will be meeting with teachers for annual fall conferences.  Conference time is a valuable time for parents and teachers to come together in support of students.

As you would expect, teachers will be prepared to share information about student work, data about student progress and goals, and will provide insights into the ways in which learning is being personalized in the classroom for each student every day. The most beneficial conferences, however, are conferences that are dialogues between parents and teachers. Teachers are eager to hear parents' observations regarding how the school year is going for their child, about homework, about their children's interests and passions, and about particular areas for concern or celebration.

As you prepare for your child's conference, think about questions you'd like to discuss with your child's teacher. If your child tends not to talk a great deal about his or her day, conferences can be a great time to get a more complete picture of your child's day at school through the eyes of the teacher. Since much of what a great teacher does to tailor learning to the individual needs of each child is done quietly and privately, children are often not aware (by design) of the ways in which teachers differentiate each lesson. Conferences can be a great time to find out more about how differentiation works in your child's classroom. Working with gifted children means dealing with children whose development is wide ranging - thinking skills may be at a different place than motor skills which may be different than attention span. Conferences can be a time to talk with your child's teacher about the ways in which s/he addresses the many levels at which your child operates, and to understand how your child's social, emotional, physical and intellectual development work together in his or her learning.

We look forward to meeting with each of you in the coming weeks. And, we look forward to dialoguing with you about your child's progress in all areas.  When teachers and parents work together as a team, the child is always the winner!

Notes from the Bear Cubs' Early Learning Center

Integrating our emergent science topic of the change of seasons with Goodbye to summerliteracy development, we each remembered our glorious summer experiences. Everyone shared at least one thought about what s/he would miss about summer. Clipboard in hand, Cathy recorded the lines in writing while I kept the questions and thought processes flowing. In the end, all the thoughtful threads were woven together to create this beautiful poem...Enjoy! Judith

Goodbye to Summer
By The Bear Cubs

Goodbye to watermelon,
And ripe, juicy berries.
Goodbye to drippy ice cream cones
And licking icy popsicles.

Goodbye to tank-tops
And shorts,
Sundresses,
And swimsuits.

Goodbye to staying up late,
Riding my bicycle,
And taking walks after dinner
While it's still light outside.

Goodbye to running through the sprinkler
On a hot day.
Goodbye to making flower necklaces
While I play in my garden.

Goodbye to picnics at the zoo,
And fishing with my dad.
Goodbye to the birds,
Flying to where it's always summer.

Goodbye to camping in the mountains
And swimming in cold lakes.
Goodbye to roasting marshmallows
Around a fire at the beach .

Goodbye to being warm at sunset,
When it takes s-o-o-o long to get dark.
Goodbye Warm, Sweet Summer...
We'll see you again next year!

Seabury's Staff Loves to Learn

Next week, Seabury's classroom teachers will join Head of School, Sandi Wollum, in attending the annual WAETAG (Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted) conference.  Our teachers will join teachers from gifted programs from across the state to hear speakers, attend workshops, and expand their knowledge in the field of gifted education.  Attendance at WAETAG is a tremendous growth opportunity for our teachers, as well as an opportunity to network with others in the state who are working with children like our Seabury children.  Teachers look forward to bringing new ideas, activities and insights into their classrooms when they return the following Monday.

In addition, later that weekend, Sandi will be attending the PNAIS Institutional Leadership Conference with board member, Lee Fisher, and the PNAIS Fall Head's Conference.  The Institutional Leadership Conference brings together Heads of School and trustees from PNAIS schools throughout the region to network and grow in their understanding of governance issues for independent schools.

The faculty and trustees are looking forward to a rich weekend of learning and growth, and to bringing back ideas that will benefit our school!

bookfair09Come to the Book Fair and support the Seabury Library!

Join us in sharing a love of reading with our students at Seabury's Scholastic Book Fair on Oct. 28-30 on the lower school campus. There will be books for students in the Early Learning Center through the MS7's and older.   It's a great way to connect your kids with books they want to read!  You may even find a book for yourself.

Your child's class will be visiting our Fair on Wednesday.  Youngsters will make wish lists and are welcome to bring money to shop with.  Be sure to ask for their lists so that you can stock up for holidays and birthdays.  Scholastic books also make great baskets for school and community auctions (hint-hint!)

We are asking families to:
1)      Visit our book fair to make your selections on Wednesday, or when you come to your parent-teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday.  I am also planning to be open briefly on Saturday, though it will be earlier than usual because my son has a swim meet in Tacoma.  I'm thinking 8-10am
2)      I would love to have a few volunteers to help.  Please email me with time you might be available; my new email address is beckyy@seabury.org.  This is a great way to get volunteer hours out of the way and meet some more of the families at Seabury.

We appreciate your dedication to supporting Seabury's library and creating lifelong readers.  See you at the Book Fair!

Meet the Board

Parents are invited to a special meeting of Seabury's Board of Trustees next Wednesday, October 21 at 7 pm in the multipurpose room at the lower school.  Parents will have the opportunity to meet and talk with trustees and learn about governance at Seabury.  At 8 pm, the board will convene its regular meeting.  Parents are invited to stay or to leave prior to the start of the business meeting.

While all of Seabury's board meetings are open to parents, this is a special opportunity to get better acquainted with the men and women who work together to support the long term sustainability and viability of Seabury.  The board hopes you can join us!

Keep on blogging!

I am not sure if that is really the correct terminology but it sounded fun to me!  All Seabury classes have a blog set up just for you to visit.  Please be sure to go to www.myseabury.org to visit all of the classroom and specialists blogs.  Madame Olliphant and Ms. Young have added new blogs.  A special note about the library blog is the Amazon.com link-Seabury gets credit for ANYTHING you buy at Amazon.com if you go through the link on Ms. Young's blog page.  Thanks to Kelli Hodges for ordering birthday books through the link!

The middle school blog has entries from their trip to Mt. Rainier along with pictures.  OPI info has been posted on the Navigators and Explorers blogs.
