From the Office
Thank you to all of the parents and students that Mia rich joannhelped to make Teacher Appreciation week so wonderful.  Without your children, we would not be here.  Nothing is so rewarding as looking into your childrens' eyes every school day when they come up to our desks with questions and seeing the flame of comprehension glow when they understand the answers.  And, listening to the laughter, and sometimes loud "bangs", coming through the walls into the office makes us curious about what is happening on the other side of that wall!  Watching your children learn, laugh, cry (yes, we do get a few tears!) and grow makes teaching all worth it.

 Thank you!
Middle School News
by Toby Welch

Building momentum and spirit are essential to any successful school environment. Over the past three weeks, I have witnessed students generating the kind of enthusiasm that will positively impact the start up of the middle school program.

moving furniture
·        Students volunteering their time to help move a tremendous amount of furniture from one location to another in the best of spirits. I was impressed with their can-do attitude, problem solving abilities (does that table really fit through that door?), and willingness to work hard.

·        We have had several students visit the school for admission recently and, in follow up conversations with their parents, each of them remarked how comfortable their child felt in the Seabury School environment because our students/your children reached out to them in genuine ways.
Girls moving
·        During one of our last Toby Times, an activity turned out to be a real "dud" and yet, we all found the humor and spirit to laugh at a game that will not be repeated.

These are only but three examples of what these students are capable of and the kind of respect that they have for the school that they attend.

Grandparents 2009What beautiful weather we had for Seabury's Grandparents and Special Friends day.  It was a joy to see our play yard filled up with students, family members and friends simply enjoying being together. Thank you to all who attended and helped to make it such a relaxed and fun afternoon.

Join us on May 21st from 4:30-6:30pm at our new Middle School address, 925 Court C, Tacoma, WA 98402. We will celebrate the signing of our lease and subsequent start of construction to make the space our own.  Come with a camera, as there will be many opportunities for "before" pictures.  The fifth and sixth grade garage band will provide entertainment. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Katherine Overton by May 17th at 253-952-5944 or seaburyadvancement@comcast.net.
Looking farther ahead, save the date for August 30th, when we will be holding our official Middle School Grand Opening.

News from the Classrooms

The Superstars have experienced tremendous growth this year.  They are well on their way to becoming accomplished readers and talented mathematicians. They have lost teeth  and grown inches.  They have mastered the monkey bars and earned many toe tags.  They have soaked up every new experience.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us on this journey.  The Beacons listened to us read and read to us.  The Navigators have helped us with keyboarding and getting comfortable in the computer 6th/superstarslab.  Our latest project is learning about the sea life around a coral reef.  Each of the Superstars picked a creature they would like to learn more about and we decided to do some research on the subject. This time it was Mr. G. and the 6th graders who came to our aid.  The 6th graders were so helpful and patient as they helped us on the computer to find information that we could use and then printed it out for us.  The Superstars have been so excited all week using their research to write about life around the coral reef.

All of these experiences have added to the excitement of kindergarten.  Thanks to all of the Seabury students who have helped us along the way.

The Summer at Seabury brochure is out.  Check out the many camps that are being offered on a weekly basis for entertaining your children this summer.  We have three different "suggested" age levels.  Check with the office if you feel your child would fit better into a category that is different than his/her age. go to www.seabury.org for more information and to download the application.  also, be sure to let friends know that the Summer at Seabury program is open to all age appropriate children in the community.
