Grandparents / Special Friends Day

Celebrate the joy of writing with us next Friday, May 1st from 1:15 - 3 p.m. at Seabury (in the morning for the Bear Cubs).  Each of our students are encouraged to invite special guests to join them in their classrooms.  Students will be sharing the work they have been doing through our Artist in Residence program, as well as giving their guests a glimpse of life at Seabury.  At 2:30, children and guests will gather on the playground for refreshments generously provided by the PBC.  Seabury's annual Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place in the MPR, and both of our artists, Eric Ode and Rushton Howard, will have their own books available for purchase.  We look forward to seeing you there!

From the Head of School

Sometimes you see yourself best through the eyes of another.  Recently, I have had a number of opportunities to see Seabury through the eyes of prospective families and community members, and have been reminded again what a special place this is.

This morning at Gathering, five of our second grade girls shared posters they made which said "Seabury is Fantastic!" and "Seabury is Super!"  I watched a visiting parent as he listened to the girls share what inspired them to make these colorful posters celebrating their school, and was reminded as a parent how lucky I am to have my son in a school that he and his friends love so much.  Singing, laughing at the "Joke of the Day," and celebrating Seabury each Friday morning puts life at school in perspective for me, and is truly a celebration each and every week.

An article in last week's New York Times by columnist Nicholas Kristof spoke to recent studies indicating that an enriched environment, especially in the early years, has a measured impact on a child's IQ.

The study focused mainly on creating greater opportunities for disadvantaged children, but also applies to the benefits Seabury's children receive from being in a program that stretches their thinking, develops their creativity, and supports them to take intellectual risks.  It reminded me again how important it is for our students to be in a rich, stimulating environment that focuses on their individual needs and takes away artificial limits that typical school settings often place on how far their learning is able to go.

As a mom, I am so grateful that my family found Seabury.  As an educator, I am energized by the opportunity to be part of helping children discover what they are truly capable of, from the three year olds creating ever more complex block designs to our middle school children discovering the complexities of events in American history.  I am grateful that your family has found Seabury too, and that we have the chance to share your child's educational journey together!

Advancement News

Thank you to Ken Fox for the $2.00 donated to purchase furniture for Seabury Middle School.  You may be thinking, "$2.00 to buy furniture?"  Ken noticed that the Tacoma School District was having an auction for some of their surplus furniture and alerted Toby. Toby visited the site where the furniture was housed, found a lot that seemed to fit our needs, bid $2.00 and won!
Today, middle school students and parents generously donated their muscle power to move that furniture into a storage room at the

Knights of Pythias building in downtown Tacoma.  Seabury is in lease negotiations with the Knights of Pythias to rent a space for the new Middle School.  Seabury Middle School now has chairs, AV carts, file cabinets and tables.  Thank you Ken Fox, Toby Welch and Seabury Middle School families!

News from the Classrooms
The Garden Work Party was an awesome success! We had a great turn out of students, parents and teachers and moved a mountain of Tagro from the playground to the garden area. We also got the Tagro tilled into the existing soil and then leveled out and ready for the pavers as well as spreading the wood chips around the Big Toy.

Garden 2  It was hard work but a lot of fun with so many members of the Seabury community present. The Garden Committee thanks everyone for their help and dedication to Seabury and the vision of a backyard  habitat.
