Last week, I asked the students what qualities they expected to have in a Middle School teacher. Here is how they responded: · Knows the subject material really well · Able to teach very effectively · Has high expectations of their students · Challenging, fair, but not overly strict · Someone who understands and helps the needs of their students · Kind, compassionate, encouraging, and optimistic · Doesn't talk too much · Fully participates in activities with students · Lets students give their opinion · Not overprotective · Open minded, willing to accept ideas from their students · Makes learning interesting, fun, and challenging at the same time · Able to accept when they are wrong · Lets students move through the curriculum at their own pace When I re-read this list and really examined what students said in response to this seemingly simple question, it is clear that they have very high expectations of their teachers. It is also abundantly clear that these students have a strong desire to learn, are interested in learning deeply, and desire teachers who care about the overall well being of their students. I read this list and recognize that these students want a strong adult role model.
