The annual cry has begun:
PROCURE! PROCURE! PROCURE!
The Auction Committee is working hard behind the scenes to get ready for the auction. Now it is up to you to help out by procuring or donating items to make our annual STAR Auction a success. There will be original and not-so-original art, baskets of all kinds of things, one-of-a-kind experiences, trips and gift certificates to events and restaurants. But it cannot come together without your help. The PBC has put together a couple of "incentives" to get you to procure: 1) Donate three (yes, just 3) items by Monday, February 2nd, and you can enjoy a Parents' Night Out for free. You can actually just turn in the procurement forms and you will be all set. 2) Every time turn in a procurement form, your child will put a ticket into a jar in her/his classroom. On Feb. 13th, all of the jars will be collected. The class with the most tickets wins a Subway picnic lunch sponsored by the PBC! Yum! 3) And, lastly, in the main office is a box where you can enter your name every time you bring in a procurement form, for the basket drawing. The basket that will be given away is sitting in the main office. So get going on getting those donations in. We will have the catalog up and going on the web pretty soon. Which reminds me: The auction committee could use a few more volunteers for before the auction and during the auction. Please contact Dawn Vitale or Margaret Jacobsen if you are interested in helping. Line up your babysitter now and SAVE THE DATE for Saturday evening, March 7th, Highline Student Center in Des Moines. Next week, Seabury's Board of Trustees will gather for an all day retreat to work on the strategic plan they are formulating to guide Seabury into the future. Made up a current parents, alum parents and community members, Seabury's trustees give tremendous time, energy and resources to support our school, and work to ensure that Seabury will be able to continue serving students from the South Sound long into the future. Seabury's trustees are focusing their work this year around a number of goals. The first is to ensure Seabury has the support and resources required to maintain the strong preschool and elementary program we have developed over the years. Second, they are providing support for the launch of the middle school, ensuring that it will be a successful, sustainable program. Third, they are working with the staff and parents to create a culture of recruitment, understanding that growing our school means increased opportunities for current and future students, and that it requires all of us to work together to spread the word about Seabury. Other goals include expanding our outreach into the community, including expanding philanthropic support for Seabury, and working with the staff to ensure Seabury successfully completes next year's PNAIS self study and accreditation in the 2010-2011 school year. We are fortunate to have a board so committed to our school and willing to give so much of themselves to ensure that our school has a stable, prosperous future. If you have questions about the Board of Trustees, or are interested in learning what it takes to become a member of the board, contact me or one of the parent trustees currently serving. Board meetings are open to the public, and you are always welcome to attend if you are interested. Seabury is so fortunate to have so many dedicated to our children. Our parents, our staff, our trustees and friends of Seabury in the community make it possible for Seabury to serve our unique children and provide them opportunities to grow and learn together. After School Clubs
In the new year, our after school enrichment offerings have continued to grow. We are fortunate to have so many opportunities for our children to participate in a wide range of clubs on our campus, and are continually looking for new classes for our students. 100% of the fees charged for programs go to pay for the program costs including teachers, materials and supplies. Seabury donates the cost of administrative staff time and facilities to operate the programs because we believe in the value of offering these experiences to our children. If your student is interested in joining a class already in progress, contact the office to see if space is still available. If you have an idea for a class, or would like to volunteer to help in the after school clubs, let us know and we will try to put it together. More classes are coming soon including a drum and vocal ensemble to be offered by our new music teacher, Jakob Breitbach.

I am pleased with the progress that we are making as the middle school curriculum and program continues to evolve and become a reality. I am also very pleased that there are many families who have made the commitment to the Seabury Middle School for next year. While it is challenging to commit to a program that you cannot visit and see in action, there is a spirit of entrepreneurism about the new program that is exciting and engaging. We are humbled and grateful to those who have helped to create that spirit! I have started to meet with the 5th and 6th grade students on a weekly basis to describe the middle school program, get their input on a variety of topics, and to answer their questions - which there are many of! Today, I asked students to begin to think of a name for the Seabury Middle School division and to come next Friday with a suggestion. The Facilities Committee is working diligently to secure a site in the very near future. We have identified three facilities that are of interest and look at each with these criteria in mind: · Safety is the number one concern · Secure access to the school space · Located in the downtown core of the city of Tacoma · Close access to public transportation and key partner organizations · Ease of access for pick-up and drop-off of students · Close to a public park · Is aesthetically pleasing and has good light · Has adequate classroom and lab space, an area for break time, space for lockers and storage, and has the square footage for expansion in the 2010/11 school year · Parking is close and available Your input, questions, and ideas are an important part of making this program a reality. We value your comments and perspectives as this program is being built and encourage you to keep those letters and cards coming! Seabury Garage Bands Play at Browns Point Pizzeria!
This week we are going to give our kudos to the afterschool Garage Bands that Mr. G has been leading for the last 8 weeks. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Explorer students and 6th grade students have been meeting to play music. Two bands were formed and they ended the session by "wowing" us all with a performance at the Browns Point Pizzeria on Thursday, January 15th. The walls rang with the rhythm of guitars wailing and bass pumping as the young musicians played in front of a packed house! These young people were in their own element as they displayed their talents for parents, siblings and friends. Alot of fun was had by all and, hopefully, this is only the beginning of the future for these young musicians. Many thanks go out to Paul Gonzenbach (alias Mr. G) for giving the gift of time and talent to work with the Explorers and 6th graders! He has expressed an interest in teaching another session. The start date will be announced soon. |

Mark your calendar for the night of March 7th!
The school is starting to buzz with auction fever. Classes are busy working on their auction projects, items are starting to come in for both the silent and live auction and teachers are thinking hard about what experiences they are going to offer for bid. This is a really fun time of year as the community comes together to put on what is always a beautiful fundraising event for Seabury. Just like the annual fund, we rely on money raised at the auction to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each child at Seabury. A successful auction is vital for the economic health of the school. That being said, an auction is only successful if there are fabulous items up for bid and fabulous people to bid on them. That is where you come in. We need your help in finding those fabulous items, and we need your fabulous faces and your fabulous friends bidding on those items at the auction. When procuring items for the auction, think about businesses that you frequent on a regular basis. People like to give to people they know or people they know frequent their business. Give that business a call or stop by to simply ask if they would be willing to donate an item. Have a procurement form ready to give to them and voila you have a great item for the auction! Maybe asking a business for a donation is not your thing, but you have a service that you can provide such as making a homemade birthday cake or chopping and delivering a cord of wood. Fill out a procurement form and voila you have another great item for the auction. Get creative. Procuring for the auction does not mean that you have to go out and buy something. However, the auction is not a place for your old hula hoop or soap on a rope. New items or services are best. If you have heirloom quality, gently used items, the auction committee will accept those on a case by case basis. If you want to clean out your garage, save those items for the PBC rummage sale at the end of the school year. It is never too late to start thinking about a table for the auction. Ask your friends at Seabury and in your circle if they would like to join you. We will have tables for 6 and 8 available. A seat at the table is $65 per person. Tickets have not gone out yet, but you can reserve your place early by e-mailing me. Remember, the ticket price includes wine and dinner. If you see Dawn Vitale or Margaret Jacobsen around, please thank them for all of the work they have put into the auction so far. Dawn is chairing procurement this year, and Margaret is in charge of the day of auction activities. Also a big thank you goes out to the individuals who have already procured items for the auction. NO SCHOOL on In-Service Days February blows in soon. Program and curriculum planning are a constant at Seabury. In February, there are two In-Service Days for planning: Thursday and Friday, February 12th and 13th. School will be closed on these days as the teachers meet to work on the programs and curriculum for our students. Also, the staff and faculty will be working on the self-study that began last year.
We will be offering childcare on both of the In-Service Days, from 7:00am until 6:00pm, to accommodate working parents. Please contact the Seabury office if you would like to take advantage of the childcare. The cost is $5.00 per hour per child, with the second child being $4.00 p .er hour and can be billed to your Seabury account.

Open Forum Seminars continue
On Thursday, January 29th, at 7:00pm, our Open Forum Seminar presentations continue. Sandi Wollum will be talking about What Does 'gifted' Really Mean? According to Mrs. Wollum: not all kids learn or develop  in the same way. How can we help our gifted children maximize their learning potential? She will be discussing the identification and education of gifted children. This is an "open forum;" therefore, we welcome your feedback during the discussions. Childcare will be provided at no cost to you. Please contact the Seabury office if you have questions. |
