Fall has arrived! Cool mornings and rainy days have reminded us this week that we are in a new season. It seems fitting that as fall begins, classes have settled into routines and learning is underway in every classroom, from our youngest to our oldest children. Please remember on these cooler days that children go out for recess whenever possible, including when it is raining. Helping your children remember to dress for the weather, by layering and wearing clothes that will keep them warm and dry if they are outside in the rain, is important. This week, our 5th and 6th grade students are at Olympic Park Institute (www.yni.org/opi) participating in a field science program. The OPI trip has become an annual tradition for Seabury's oldest students, and has been an incredible opportunity for students to use Olympic National Park as an outdoor classroom to study the ecology, geology and biology of our region. This year, our 6th graders are participating in OPI's Elwha River study program (Click for more information about the study), a scientific research project OPI is leading to study the effects of the removal of the Elwha dams in 2008. As the largest watershed restoration project in human history, the Elwha river project will provide scientists with invaluable information that may be useful as future dam removal projects are considered. Participating in the project gives students a chance to do the kind of hands-on, experiental, relevant learning that will be the foundation of Seabury's middle school program, and that is an important part of our elementary program. Students and teachers will have more information to share when they return. A huge thank you to Paul Gonzenbach, Mary O'Brien and Toby Welch for coordinating this trip, and to the parent chaperones, Michia Fox, Michael Yeh, John Min, and Cindy Zetts, for making the trip possible. It is a joy being a member of the Seabury community, and to see the joy of learning in classrooms and in field studies! ~~Sandi

EARLY LEARNING CENTER BEAR CUBS By Judith Nielsen The Bear Cubs (formerly known as Ladybugs) are settling into our new classroom, featuring a mountain to sea habitat throughout. We LOVE our northwest habitat, designed by Margaret Jacobsen, assisted by Skyree Sandvik, and sponge painted by many parent volunteers. If you haven't hiked in yet, please do stop by and take in the view! We have spent the month of September meeting, exploring and renewing friendships, learning about ourselves and one another. As always, our philosophy revolves around hands-on learning through creative exploration and experimentation. We love to move, experience the world with our senses, play, problem solve and learn by tapping into our natural curiosity, creativity and imagination. We are happy to be together, growing our "cubmunity!" Bear Cubs blog |
