Richards Bay Team 2008
Beacon of Hope News
June 2009
We regret not getting a newsletter out for three months. This break in our regular news cycle is certainly not because of a lack of news to share.  On the contrary we am having a hard time keeping up and progress being made by our teams in South Africa. We are getting close to our 2009 mission trip so it is definitely time to get an update out to our readers and supporters.
Crossroads - Boston - Durban Team
The  team of eleven people lead by Paul Hickey left from Boston on June 12.  They will be working with John Tempelhoff and his team in Durban to continue the Smart Choices program in Durban and the surrounding townships.
Beacon of Hope - California - Richards Bay - Greytown - Sohanguve team
The team preparing to leave for Richards Bay will consist of four members, all from California this year.  The team is Glynn Smith and Mark Carey who also went on last years trip, and a father and son  team from the Village Church of Irvine, Robert and Nicholas Delgado. We leave on July 29, Robert and Nicholas return on August 16 and Mark and Glynn stay an extra week to take part in a fund raising activity in CapeTown on August 14 and then spend the rest of the third week with Zodwa in Soshanguve.

The intended trip to Kitale Kenya lead by Curtis and Rhonda Brownell has been cancelled for this year.

Trip Fund Raising Status
Our budget goal to cover basic trip expenses for airfares, ground transport, accomodation, meals is $12800. We are currently at $10336.50.  Naturally any ammount we have in excess of budget enables us to bless our African teem partners and orphans and school students to a greater degree.  A very sincere heartfealt thank you to all that hav contributed to the trip so far.
Summary of Progress in Richards Bay
Clement & Thuli Clement's Team:
They have already taught more than 1800 students this year the joint Richards Bay student count is about 2400.  Clement's teams have been commissioned by one school district to teach the smart choices program to all the students in 25 schools.  The school district wants him to complete all of these schools by December.  This is an impossible task but that is what motivates Clement, impossible tasks.

Kenny & ComfortKenny's Team:
They have taught about 500 students and is still negotiating with prison officials to start the Smart Choices program in the Empangeni Prison.  Kenny has teamed up with a church in his city that has a non profit tax status to enable to do local fundraising.  A new exciting development for Kenny is that he has been invited to attend a convocation of pastors hosted by the Holy Life Pentecostal Church in New York at the end of July. Please pray for him that he will be able to get the necessary US Visa and raise the funds to cover his airfare.

Derrick's team:
They have taught about 170 students directly but the Outlook church team working with Derrick in the Richards Bay area have trained another team form the Richards Bay Baptist church.  The Baptist team lead by Pastor Duncan Miller started a new direction of training in the city schools.  Our emphasis so far in Richards Bay has been on the rural schools.  Derrick has recruited a new team member who is collage educated, has some computer experience and in addition to school teaching she will also help him run the Campus Crusade office.  I am hoping that with Dumile's help I will be able to keep better records of the teams activity.
Summary of Progress in Sohanguve
Zodwa-2009-100Zodwa's team:
They have held two group training sessions since the last update to train new churches who have undertaken to adopt a school and present the Smart Choice program to all students in the school. See the link to Sohanguve April Report.
