Sealants, Adhesives and Membranes, Oh My! (June 15, 2010 GCABC Breakfast Session)by Rich Porayko Social Media Correspondent for GCABC
I confess that as a glass marketing guy with a background in IG manufacturing
most of my experience with sealants has
been geared toward the primary and secondary seals of an insulated glass unit. Which is why I was pleased
to hear that the topic of the GCABC's latest breakfast session was "New
Innovations in Structural Adhesives, Insulations and Membranes". And as usual,
the breakfast meeting did not disappoint. I walked away from the panel session
with a much better understanding of some of the current challenges and
solutions facing the industry. For more click here. |
ICBest Conference Provides Insight to BIPV Market and Offshore Manufacturing Operations.By Rich Porayko
The
International Conference on Building Systems and Technology 2010 took place
June 27-30, in at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Started in Singapore in
1994, the ICBEST conference is held in a new international host city every
three years and is organized by the British Columbia Building Envelope Council,
in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada. ICBEST
provides a worldwide forum for the exchange of information and discussion of
recent developments in building envelope engineering. The aim is to bridge the
gaps between researchers, engineers, designers and manufacturers, and to
enhance the exchange of ideas between them. "Globally,
the building envelope community has common goals to achieve: sustainable
development, improvement of the quality of life, management of our resources,
promotion of innovation and many others," said Bas Baskaran, ICBEST Technical
Committee co-chair, during the opening ceremony. "The evolution of the ICBEST
conference over the past two decades is testimony to the determined pursuit of
knowledge of several dedicated individuals. Engineers, architects, researchers,
practitioners, designers, asset managers and decision makers sharing their
knowledge on façade engineering." ICBEST received more than
200 abstracts in response for the call for papers. The proceedings contained
120 contributions from 22 countries.

Glass Connections 2010 Seminars will feature a mix of technical and industry specific business
management topics
VANCOUVER, BC - The Canadian
Glass Association (CGA) has announced the speakers and topics for its inaugural
Conference & Trade Show taking place on September 30, 2010 at the Delta
Burnaby Hotel & Conference Centre. Glass Connections 2010 is a
highly focused educational and networking event for glaziers, architects,
engineers, designers, spec writers, commercial construction contractors and
building owners. Seminar topics will address photovoltaic technology for the
glass industry, window thermal performance, the durability of insulating glass
units, recruiting top level talent and a session outlining the new standards to
improve the energy efficiency of windows and glazing systems under the BC
Energy Efficiency Act. Leonard Pianalto, P.Eng, the
technical committee chairperson for the conference, says it wasn't difficult
for committee members to recruit a panel of highly knowledgeable industry
experts. "The people on the technical committee were well connected enough to
personally know experts who can speak about the topics we wanted to cover in
the curriculum. It developed organically," he says, adding that they wanted a
mix of technical and industry specific business management topics. "There is a
variety of elements in the program that are relevant to anybody involved in the
glazing industry, including trades people, suppliers, architects and
engineers." One session by Andrew Pape
Salmon, director of the Energy Efficiency Branch for the Ministry of Energy in
BC, will outline the policy and market overview of latest government, utility
and private sector standards for the energy efficiency of windows and glazing
systems in new and existing buildings. The presentation will summarize some of the typical technical
characteristics of products that are compliant with the regulated standards in
the province, along with estimated energy savings for new and existing homes,
and new multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs)."There have been a lot of
changes in the building codes pertaining to the Energy Efficiency Act that will
directly impact BC and the rest of Canada," says Pianalto. "The emphasis will
be on sustainability and the upcoming code changes." In addition, the conference will host a Table Top
Trade Show to give manufacturers and suppliers the opportunity to showcase
their products, services and upcoming technologies. "The CGA wanted to provide
a venue for them as well so we will have a trade show mixed in with the
conference. It is a unique educational event as all of this will be happening
in one day," says Pianalto. "We hope to show attendees that the CGA is on top
of the latest trends and issues related to the glazing industry."

Jordan Stievfater says Thanks GCABC
Jordan Stievfater was the first person to receive the new GCABC Bursary. Jordan attended Level I training at the Finishing Trades Institute of BC located in Surrey. "It answered a lot of questions and gives me the confidence I needed to continue in glazing," says Jordan.
GCABC has budgeted for 3 bursaries to be allocated for every fiscal year. To date Jordan has been the only successful applicant.

Can Workplace Bullying be Cured with Legislation? Ontario has introduced its Occupational Health and Safety
Amendment Act (Violence and Harassment in the Workplace). This legislation will impose broad
obligations on employers in that province with respect to workplace violence
and harassment.
In brief, this legislation provides definitions for workplace
"violence" and "harassment" and requires employers to implement related
policies and programs and training, to conduct ongoing workplace assessments of
the risk of violence, and to disclose information to workers about persons with
a history of violent behaviour.
This legislation is in addition to Ontario's regime of
workplace regulation, including existing employment standards and human rights
and occupational health and safety laws. The question many Ontario employers may be asking is, "Is more workplace
regulation really necessary?"
On the one hand, statistics suggest that workplace bullying
is prevalent. The Globe & Mail
reported, recently, on studies showing that 80% of workers report "at least one
incident of harassment in the course of their career."
The same article stated that 30% of workers report
"repeated instances of bullying at some point in their career" and 5% report
that they are "being bullied in their current job". Those are some persuasive numbers, at least
until you take into account that they seem to be reflective only of the
employees' own perception.
