Local Company Supports New Canada Line Stations From Behind the Scenes
RICHMOND,
B.C. August 24, 2009 -The eye-catching glass structures that will welcome
visitors from around the world during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and
shelter Canada Line riders from the elements for years to come are supported by
local company, Stella Custom Glass Hardware Inc. The Richmond-based company
supplied the hardware for the exterior structural glass walls, interior glass
walls, glass canopies, handrails and balustrades throughout 12 of the Canada
Line Stations.
In
response to modern architecture's demand for increasingly transparent walls,
Stella Custom Glass Hardware Inc. reduced the size of the supporting
structures. In designs such as the Canada Line, glass is directly attached to
the structure via point-supported glass hardware, which are bolted fittings
directly connected through holes in the glass.
This
hardware, also called "spiders", provides the appearance of a seamless glass
wall and increases architectural diversity. At downtown stations, such as
Vancouver City Centre and Yaletown - Roundhouse, this discreet hardware focuses
the eye on the stylish use of glass and overall structure of the station.
"Stella's
hardware allows the creation of structures that seamlessly marry functionality
and architectural beauty which can be seen at many of the new Canada Line
stations," said Roy Lamont, President of Stella Custom Glass Hardware Inc, "We
understood the client's need to provide cost-effective and attractive stations
along the line. Working collaboratively with all the stakeholders from an early
stage in the design assisted the client in achieving their objective for Canada
Line construction, on time and on budget."
Stella
was critical in the creation of a unique 325-foot wave roof at the Canada Line
YVR - Airport Station by providing custom fittings that allowed rigid glass
panels to appear curved against the steel structure. In the planning of the
Canada Line station design, Stella representatives met with key stakeholders
and demonstrated that their unique fittings could achieve four key design
objectives - transparent design, structural support, cost-effectiveness, and
ease of installation through a system on structural walls that allows the glass
to 'click' into place in four steps.
Stella's
hardware can be seen throughout the Greater Vancouver area, from downtown
office canopies to restaurant guardrails, and is featured throughout key
Olympic venues, such as the Richmond Olympic Oval and Vancouver Olympic
Centre/Vancouver Paralympic Centre at Hillcrest Park. Stella Custom Glass
Hardware along the Canada Line was installed by Port Coquitlam-based glazing
contractor, Glastech Contracting BC Ltd.

Pension Clarity for Employers
Millions of Canadians' retirement
hopes rest on the fiscal health of the private pension plan to which they've
contributed during their career.
Understandably, that makes them sensitive to how the employer administers
the pension plan fund. Disputes
have arisen, over time, relating to employers' administration of the plan
funds. Such things as expenses paid out
of the fund, and so-called contribution holidays taken by the employer are, not
surprisingly, viewed by some employees as diminishing the funds available to
eventually pay out pension benefits.
