Greetings! Happy New Year! I started 2012 with a tremendous amount of gratitude. They say that how you start the year sets the tone for the next 12 months - if that's the case than it is good news for Connections! In the very first year of our Gift of Giving program, we were able to match 100 clients with donors to receive personalized gifts this holiday season. Over 200 more clients received gifts of new winter clothing from a variety of groups and individuals who donated generously. One of our recently housed clients received her gifts, brought them home, and unable to resist the temptation, opened them immediately. Moments later she called her case manager to say how much she loved them. She could not believe how thoughtful her secret donor had been. "I am so amazed that someone who I don't even know cared about me enough to buy me a Christmas present. I didn't even tell them what my favorite perfume was but I got it anyway!" The rest of that story is from her case manager who told us, "I think this is the first time I've ever seen "Betty" smile. I couldn't actually see her smile over the phone but I could hear it in her voice. She was genuinely touched. It lifted her spirits so much." We all know that a simple wrapped gift isn't going to fix the tenuous financial, health, and employment issues of the people we serve. However, the gifts of all our donors did send a clear message that being poor or even homeless does not mean you are alone and invisible. Breaking through the feeling of isolation was probably the bigger gift that you gave. Thank you for your generous spirit and for your decision to live out a value that says all people matter. Peace to you,
Lisa Todd
