Be on the lookout for this critter! As temperatures begin to cool, this 6-legged pest begins to move inside (sneaking in around door and window frames), looking for warmer winter quarters. The Western Conifer Seed Bug is not a new problem on Long Island. How do you deal with the WCSB? There are no recommended insecticides; mechanical controls (squish, squish) are the only remedy. A kissing cousin to the WCBS, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, has become a huge nuisance (and troublesome to fruit and vegetable crops) around homes - inside and out! Sadly, there are no recommended insecticidal controls for the BMSB, either.
Continue to harvest any veggies as they ripen. Remember to donate extra harvest to the INN's soup kitchens via Martin Viette.
Looking to seed/reseed your lawn? The window of opportunity is closing; do it before it's too late.
All houseplants (that enjoyed a summer's vacation outdoors) should be back inside. If you fertilize, last call until next March.

Daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, snow drops, fritillarias, anemones and more - it's bulb planting time on Long Island. Remember - you have to plant these bulbs in the fall to enjoy their amazing blooms in spring. Haven't gotten your bulbs yet? If you snooze, you'll lose!
Bulb planting is easy and fun. Make it a family activity and get the kids involved; they'll be amazed at the results next spring! Here's how: choose a location that's bright and sunny (6 plus hours a day of sunshine). Well-drained soils are an absolute must; soils that are frequently wet or soggy, especially during the winter months, should be avoided! Not sure how deep to plant your bulbs? Figure 2 ½ to 3 times the diameter of the bulbs in depth. Example - if your tulip bulb is 2" in diameter, plant it 5-6" deep. Add Bulb-tone or bone meal to the soil. Cover the bulbs and water in. Helpful hint: squirrels like tulip bulbs so use a repellent like Repels-All when planting.
Clever gardeners know how to stretch the blooming season by sequencing. Plant early, mid and late season bloomers so you can enjoy months of spring color. Need help in stretching the bloom time? Just ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates!
You can bring the beauty of spring flowering bulbs into your home when you buy extra bulbs for forcing. Not sure how to coax daffodils, tulips and others to bloom for you indoors? We'll share the tricks of the trade with you when you shop at Martin Viette.

And everyone's summer flowering favorites - hydrangeas and crape myrtles - can be found (and a whole lot more) on sale, now at Martin Viette.

Pelee mums, in beautiful fall colors, let you bring the outside in! The amazing blooms of Pelees will last for 3-4 weeks in bright light areas in the home or office. Easy to care for - keep soil barely moist - never soggy or bone dry! A word to the wise - avoid wilting as this greatly reduces the quality and longevity of the flowers. Don't confuse Pelee mums with hardy mums. Pelee mums are greenhouse-grown and treated as annuals; they are not perennial on Long Island. |

We have pumpkins! Actually, 1000's of pumpkins to choose from, including the ever-popular Jack-Be-Littles (great for tiny hands) to large pumpkins for carving or decorating. You're sure to find that perfect pumpkin or two!

You really can plant it all in the fall - trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and lawns! Long Island is typically blessed with an extended fall growing season. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly-purchased plants to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Another reason to plant it all in the fall - when spring 2013 arrives, you'll enjoy your garden that much sooner.
