Love spring flowering daffodils, tulips, hyacinths? To enjoy them in spring; you must plant in the fall. Our bulbs have just arrived for planting now through fall. Join us for a special lecture this Saturday at 11am under the big green tent.

Cooler nights mean all houseplants should be back indoors by now!

In case you're tempted; now is NOT the time to apply fertilizer to trees and shrubs. Wait until Thanksgiving to fertilize.

You really can plant it all in the fall - trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and lawns! Long Island is typically blessed with an extended fall growing season. Warm days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall make it easy for newly-purchased plants to adapt to new planting sites. And even though the nights are cooler, our soils tend to stay warm through much of the fall. That's good news for plant roots that continue to grow until soil temperatures dip down into the high 30's. Another reason to plant it all in the fall - when spring 2013 arrives, you'll enjoy your garden that much sooner.

Firecracker Flower, aka Crossandra infundibuliformis, is native to southern India, Sri Lanka, and tropical Africa.

Firecracker flower is hardy in zone 10 and warmer (think Miami) where it's used as a small landscape shrub. On Long Island, it can be used outside in containers and window boxes during the growing season; and then indoors as a houseplant for the winter months.

Like orange? With Firecracker flower, you'll enjoy spikes of salmon-orange, lightly fragrant flowers. Grow in bright light year 'round (indoors or out), but shade from intense outdoor summer afternoon sun. Keep soil barely moist at all times (this plant does not like soil that is dry or waterlogged); providing extra humidity is a plus. Fertilize during the growing season (March through October).
