It will soon be time to bring vacationing houseplants back indoors for the winter months. Check for any unwanted 'hitchhikers'; and if found, treat as needed. Not sure what remedies can be used? Ask us the next time you shop at Martin Viette.

If you haven't already. . .it's time to repair lawns damaged by weeds, insects, diseases, and this summer's heat and drought. Remember to always buy quality grass seed that matches the site - sunny mixtures for sunny sites, shady mixtures for shady sites.

Mosquitoes continue to be a nuisance; remember to eliminate standing water where possible.

Continue to harvest veggies and herbs as they ripen.

Osteospermum, commonly called African daisy, makes a great addition to cool season plantings! Prized for its incredible daisy-like flowers, African daisy is a natural for sunny annual pots, planters, window boxes, and beds and borders. Mix osteospermums with pansies, ornamental peppers, cabbage, and kale for beautiful fall color in the garden or landscape. Helpful hints: keep soil barely moist; never allow it to dry out. Remove spent flowers to encourage more blossoms through fall.

impatien
Have you grown impatient with your impatiens not doing well this summer? Sadly, impatiens have been battling (and not winning) a fungus known as 'Downy Mildew'. New to Long Island, but widespread in many other areas of the United States, Downy Mildew has wiped-out impatiens in many gardens and landscapes.

Here's a brief summary of Downy Mildew. To learn more, please go to: http://ccesuffolk.org/assets/Horticulture-Leaflets/Impatiens-downy-mildew.pdf

What does Downy Mildew look like? Initially the leaves look yellow and slightly stippled. As the fungus advances, the plant may look wilted - like it needs water, and the undersides of the leaves may have a white coating. The end result is a stunted plant with few, if any leaves remaining.

How does it spread? Downy Mildew spreads by wind or water.

What can be done? Sanitation is important; remove and bag the infected plants and dispose of when found.

What about alternative plants for shade? No doubt about it; impatiens have been the mainstay of shady gardens and landscapes for years. However, there are other exciting choices for beds, borders, planters, window boxes, and baskets that are in the works with our growers. (There is life after impatiens!) Stay tuned; we are networking with Cornell University's Research Lab to provide you with a colorful palette of shade annuals for the 2013 growing season.

It's early September and that means only one thing when we talk about lawn insects - grubs! These grubs could be the larvae of several types of beetles including oriental, Asiatic or Japanese beetles.

It's important to understand the life cycle of these insidious lawn pests. This diagram, courtesy of Cornell University, shows the life cycle of the Japanese beetle, an insect easily recognized by many gardeners.

At this time of the year, young grubs should be in the upper root zone area of the lawn, actively feeding on the roots of your lawn. If found, the sooner you treat the better! The younger the grub, the more effective the treatment will be. Read and follow the label directions to a tee (we have remedies to combat these pests!). If left untreated, grubs will continue to feed for the next 4-6 weeks (or longer if we have a warm, extended fall) before they dig deeper into the soil to spend the winter months. They'll begin to surface again next spring, and resume feeding. The only difference, older grubs are much more difficult to control than those found in your lawn now. To the point - treat now when grubs are young and most vulnerable to insecticides!
