Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki', aka false holly or variegated holly leaf Osmanthus, is an attractive, hardy (zones 6-9; we are considered zone 7) evergreen shrub native to Eastern Asia.

So much to offer; Osmanthus is prized for its handsome green holly-like leaves (it can easily be mistaken for holly). New growth emerges coppery in color; and then matures to green splashed with creamy gold. Another plus, its growth habit - upright, yet dense and compact - makes it ideal for use in shrub borders; foundation plantings; hedges (beware of prickly leaves!); or as accent plants in the landscape. 'Goshiki' is slow growing; ultimately reaching 4-10' in height and width (but can be pruned). For best results, grow in full sun to part shade; and moist, yet well-drained soils. Heavy soils should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting.

And if you garden in deer country, 'Goshiki' is reported to be highly deer-resistant!
