lawn
Evaluate the lawn now for any needed work to be done later this month.

Heavy rains or flash floods can cause mulch to shift. Mulch should be evenly distributed in landscape beds and borders; remember 2" of mulch is all that's needed to get the job done. BTW - never mound mulch around the crown or trunk of any plants.

It's time to start seeds of cool season veggies! Lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower enjoy the cooler growing conditions fall has to offer (believe it or not - cooler weather is right around the corner!).

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides! That's a mouthful! It's so much easier to call this late summer/early fall blooming perennial (hardy in zones 6-9, we are considered zone 7) by its common names of leadwort or dwarf plumbago.

Culture: A wiry grower that spreads by rhizomes, CP can grow up to 12" high and 12-18" wide. It's a deciduous mat-forming groundcover, so provide adequate spacing so it can spread and fill in. Did you know? CP emerges a bit later in spring so mark or label its planting location. Three seasons of interest, expect spring to bring new burgundy leaves that turn green in summer. Late summer provides a show of beautiful blue flowers that last into early fall. Autumn leaves delight with a coppery bronze tinge.

Care: full sun or light shade. If grown in intense full sun locations, CP would appreciate some light afternoon shade during the hottest months. Soils should be well drained; avoid planting in areas that puddle or retain excess moisture.

Uses: as a groundcover or edging around landscape beds and borders, or in rock gardens.

Helpful hints: CP should be pruned back in late winter to encourage new spring growth. And if you garden in deer country, CP is reported to be deer resistant.
