weedy
Weeds, weeds, weeds! Keep up with any 'freeloaders' (that rob needed moisture and nutrients) in gardens and landscape beds. Not sure what the weed is or how to deal with it? Bring a sample to our diagnostic desk for assistance!

Continue to harvest veggies as they ripen. FYI - Zucchinis should NOT be the size of baseball bats!

Struggling flowering annuals should be fertilized to encourage more blooms and healthy new growth.

Summer's hot weather has slowed growth on many home lawns. (Makes sense as Kentucky bluegrasses and perennial ryegrasses are the predominant cool season grasses on LI!) Be sure to mow as needed, generally every 7-10 days. Keep mower blades sharp, and set the mowing height to 3 - 3 ½".
hornworm
Here today; gone tomorrow. . .If the leaves of your tomato plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, it could be the work of the infamous tomato hornworm!

Tomato hornworms have three distinct stages - egg, larva and adult moth. It's the larval stage that does all the damage. Small caterpillars quickly grow to several inches in size as they devour every leaf on every plant. Careful inspection should reveal these creepy crawlers with the requisite 'hook' at their tail end.

Options for control: Handpicking is the most obvious form of organic control (put on gloves to remove them if you're squeamish!). Organic sprays also exist; make sure the product you buy is labeled for controlling tomato hornworms. Follow all directions to a tee.

Mother Nature at work! If you see a tomato hornworm with 'puffed' rice (really cocoons of the wasps) on its back, you know the beneficial Braconid wasp is working its magic. The unlucky tomato hornworm is the 'food source' for the emerging braconid wasps, so leave it be!
bamboo plam
Bamboo palm, formally known as Chamaedorea seifrizii, is a tropical plant native to Mexico and Central America. In tropical areas (think Miami) it's often used as a screening plant for privacy. On Long Island, it's used as a houseplant year 'round, or as a deck or patio plant during the summer months.

Bamboo palm is a multi-stemmed, compact palm with reed-like stems (sometimes also called 'reed palm'). NASA (the Space Agency) credits Bamboo palm with being a 'clean air' plant. Their studies showed that this plant can remove Trichloroethylene from the air.

Care: Bamboo palm is best suited for medium light areas in the home; never direct or full sun. Water thoroughly; then allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. A word to the wise - avoid excess soil moisture!

Uses: This well-behaved palm looks great as a floor plant in medium light areas in the home. Camouflage its growing container with a glazed pot, planter or urn.
