Seeing spots before your eyes? Dollar Spot, a summer fungus, is rearing its ugly head in lawns all over Long Island. This disease appears as small circular spots from 1-6 inches in diameter scattered throughout lawn areas. The spots are typically straw colored and found from June through October. All types of turf grasses can be affected.
There are some things that you can do to minimize or avoid Dollar Spot. For starters, water early in the day, not late at night. Doing so allows the grass blades to dry before the evening. Dry soils, in lawn areas, that are deficient in Nitrogen (N) are often bothered by Dollar Spot. Fertilize as needed and according to label directions.
Some things are out of our control - namely, the weather. Warm days and cool nights favor the development of Dollar Spot in lawns. And excessive rain (think back to April, May and June - ugh!) adds insult to injury.
Controlling Dollar Spot: Labeled fungicides can be used to control Dollar Spot. Read and follow all label directions to a tee before you apply the product.
Don't despair; affected areas can be reseeded later this summer. Consider doing any renovation after August 15th.
