beetle
Beetles - Japanese, Oriental, and Asiatic - are making their presence known in gardens and landscapes! Check rose, hibiscus, petunia, and others for signs of feeding damage (read: decimation). The time to treat is now; ask us about a recommended insecticide or trap.

If you must use a pesticide, it's imperative to do so in the early morning or evening when the temperatures have cooled down (a bit). It's best to avoid any applications when air temperatures are 85 degrees or warmer.

Digital cameras (& cell phones) can capture the good, the bad, & the ugly in the garden. Take pictures each week for future reference.

Continue to deadhead spent blooms to keep annuals in flowering mode.

It's time to sound the trumpets for Trumpet vine, aka Campsis radicans! This vigorous, very hardy vine (zones 4-11; we are considered zone 7) blooms spring through fall with orangey-red, trumpet-like flowers. (Trumpet vine is the perfect common name for this plant.) Best planted in sunny locations with well-drained soils; then stand back and watch the hummingbirds flock to it! Trumpet vine is well-suited for arbors, pergolas, or fencing.
drought
DRY, DRY, DRY! Sadly, no rain this past week, and no rain in the immediate forecast; it is dry! That's your cue to water wisely and deeply. Invest in a drip or soaker hose to apply water to where it's needed most - the roots! Long, deep watering is the way to go. If you water your lawn, trees, or shrubs daily, it's a waste of water and damaging to your plants! (Pictured: drought damage on climbing hydrangea.)

What else can you do? Consider applying 1-2" of mulch to conserve needed soil moisture. Remember - do not mound mulch around the crown or trunks of plants! This is a bad, bad practice sometimes referred to as 'volcano mulching'.

Let us show you how to be water-wise! Proper watering: promotes healthy plants, saves precious water, and saves you money. Click here to read the full story.
