The XXX Olympic Games are just weeks away. To jump start Olympic fever, here are a few more of our favorite plants for Long Island gardens. This week we are featuring annuals (plants that will not overwinter in our climate) for planters, hanging baskets, window boxes, and as edgings.
Melampodium, aka Butter Daisy, is an easy-to-grow sun-loving annual for beds, borders, window boxes, edgings, and mixed planters. A prolific bloomer, golden-yellow daisy-like flowers appear on mounded plants until frost. For best results, grow in moist, well-drained soils.
Need a shot of color in a shady spot? Coleus 'Wasabi' electrifies with its large, serrated chartreuse leaves! (By the way - it's not the same old, same old. New coleus varieties have come a long way in recent years!) 'Wasabi' is a true dazzler for part sun to shady beds, borders, planters, or window boxes. Tough and durable, grow in moist, yet well-drained soils. 'Wasabi' will grow 18" - 26" tall and wide.
Celosia 'Castle Yellow' delights with long-lasting spears of bright yellow flowers in the sunny garden. Easy-to-grow and vigorous, use 'Castle Yellow' in mixed planters, window boxes, edgings, and beds and borders. A well-kept secret about celosia - they make great cut flowers for informal bouquets or arrangements.
