Beware of standing or collecting water from recent rain; mosquitoes are looking for places to breed! It's best to eliminate their breeding areas ASAP - tip over pots, saucers or other water collecting receptacles. Use MosquitoDunks®, a biological control that lasts for 30 days, in fountains, ponds and other areas of standing water. Swat! Remember to arm yourself with mosquito repellents. We have solutions to these pesky pests!

Primping time for annual flowers: liquid feed with Jack's Blossom Booster; read and follow label directions. Remove dead blooms to encourage more flowers this season.

Pinch back fall blooming mums again. Doing so creates a bushier plant with more blooms this fall.

The XXX Olympic Games are just a month away. To jump start Olympic fever, here are a few of our picks for 'gold' plants for Long Island gardens..

Delicious and delightful, perennial daylilies are excellent choices for gardens and landscape beds, borders, and massed plantings. Formally known as Hemerocallis (Greek translation: hemera meaning day, kallos meaning beauty), each flower lasts for just a day. Thankfully, most produce an abundance of blooms that we can enjoy for many weeks in the garden.

Our Olympic gold choices for daylilies include 'Buttered Popcorn', a repeat bloomer that produces large (up to 6") butter-yellow, fragrant flowers. Short in scale, but long on returns, Daylily 'Happy Returns' is prized for its compact growth habit and mildly-fragrant pale yellow flowers make this an ideal choice for planters, edgings along walkways or driveways, and landscape beds and borders.

How to grow: plant daylilies in well-drained soils that have been amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Full sun is ideal for best flowering. Deep watering is best; provide an inch of water per week for best growth. Overhead watering during sunny days will spot and ruin daylily flowers. It's always best to water the soil - not the leaves or the flowers! Mulch (2") can be used to conserve soil moisture (avoid applying near the crown of the plants).

Care: Divide daylilies when overcrowded (perhaps every 4-5 years) in spring or fall. Fertilize in early spring with Plant-tone.

Grooming: Clean up dead foliage in late fall (a rake is very handy for this chore). Any remaining foliage can be removed in early spring before new growth resumes.

Uses: in pots and planters; in landscape beds and borders; on slopes. Daylilies make a beautiful statement when planted en masse.
