leaf spot
Various fungal leaf spots are appearing on a variety of plants. You can 'thank' all the wet, humid weather we've experienced during May & into June. Options: avoid overhead irrigation (where possible); select fungicides can be used curatively according to label recommendations; if you elect to hand pick infected leaves - do so when dry, dispose of, and then wash your hands before touching healthy leaves.

BTW - Happy summer (it officially arrived yesterday)!

Seeds, seeds, seeds. . . Broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and peas are cool season vegetables that enjoy two planting and growing seasons on Long Island - spring and fall. If you wait much longer, these cool season veggie seeds will disappear from our racks and will not be available. Buy and store seeds until starting/planting time arrives later this summer.

Be on the lookout for emerging Japanese Beetles. (Remember - roses are their all-time favorite!) Consider your options - handpick and dispose of; spray; or use a well-placed pheromone trap.

The XXX Olympic Games are just a month away. To jump start Olympic fever, here are our picks for 'gold' plants for Long Island gardens.

Picea orientalis 'Skylands', aka 'Skylands oriental spruce', is a hardy (zones 4-7) specimen evergreen for the residential landscape. 'Skylands', slow-growing with an upright, conical-pyramidal form, typically grows 8-10' tall over the first 10 years. Over time, it may eventually reach 35' tall with a spread of 10-12' wide. Exterior needles are bright yellow in full sun or yellow-green in part shade, a nice contrast to its interior green needles. Attractive carmine-red pollen cones in spring provide striking interest and contrast with its yellow foliage. For best results, grow in moist, yet well-drained soils. A 2-3" layer of mulch will keep roots cool during the summer months. 'Skylands' was introduced by Skylands Botanical Garden in New Jersey in 1979.

Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst', informally known as Taylor's Sunburst Lodgepole pine, was discovered in the Colorado Rockies by Alan Taylor. A spring stunner (hardy in Zones 4 - 8; we are Zone 7) in the landscape, this upright, somewhat irregular evergreen sports brilliant yellow new growth, and tiny red first-year cones. Taylor's Sunburst is best grown in full sun and well-drained soils in landscape beds and borders. Slow growing; expect 6' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Reported to be deer resistant.

Here's a name that truly describes the plant - Taxus cuspidata 'Dwarf Bright Gold Needles'! This unusual yew, with an upright growth habit, sports needled-foliage that has a bright yellow margin with a crisp green center. Ultimately, 'Dwarf Bright Gold Needles' will be wider than taller; a slow grower, expect 4-5' tall after 10 years. A word to the wise when growing yews - well-drained soils are a must! Adequate soils moisture is required, however - avoid soils that are heavy or slow-to-drain. Amend existing soils with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Grow in full sun or light shade to brighten up a lifeless area of the landscape. Expect low maintenance; with little, if any pruning, needed.
