A GRATEFUL CONGREGATION Shabbat Parshat Vayeshev 5771 |
|

We learn in the Mishna that we should aim to recite 100 blessings each day. The purpose of this teaching is not to walk around mumbling prayers. Instead, it is to change our perspective to have 'an attitude of gratitude.' That was the feeling I shared with many of you this past week after a spectacular weekend full of excitement, reflection and energy. On Friday morning, pro-Israel activists in our Temple broke bread and learned with and about Member of Knesset, the Honorable Shlomo Molla and his fascinating story of escaping Ethiopia and being rescued by Israeli paratroopers in the dark of night and eventually living a life of leadership in Israel. MK Molla is a leading advocate for religious pluralism in Israel and represents the deep diversity and many faces of the State of Israel. All who heard him were deeply inspired by his passion and charm.

Our congregation was then blessed with spending Shabbat with our Scholar in Residence, noted author and rabbi, Naomi Levy who spoke and taught our congregation on the ability to begin again, overcome adversity and talk to God through prayer and deed. Countless hearts and souls were profoundly touched by the teachings and sessions Rabbi Levy facilitated. These two memorable events, happening over the course of less than 72 hours, represent just a snapshot of the activities, programs and portals that Temple Emanu-El regularly offers our community at large. Like many things in life, we often take our Temple,- perhaps even being Jewish, perhaps even living in a country where we are free to choose our religion and how we express it - for granted. Deep down, that is why Thanksgiving is a Jewish holiday. After all, isn't the purpose of this holiday so similar in nature to most of our Jewish holidays; a time to pause, reflect and appreciate our collective and individual bounties? This is the very essence of the Shehechiyanu prayer - thanking God for sustaining us and allowing us to reach this moment with our many blessings, that we recite at each Jewish holiday. As we gather with family around the turkey and fixings for the holiday, be sure to pause and say the Shehechiyanu prayer - blessings of thanksgiving for our Temple, our community, our programs and the countless gifts we have to be thankful for. Make sure the essence of this holiday is never taken for granted, rather celebrated and appreciated as one of the many blessings we have each day in our lives. Wishing you and meaningful and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
Shabbat Shalom,
