Information about Antibiotics in the Food Supply & other Sustainable Living Resources
Chef Cavanaugh recently had the pleasure of attending the Food, Antibiotics & Public Health: Call to Action program presented by Thomas Jefferson University, Pew Environment Group and Women's Health & Environmental Network, with support from Health Care Without Harm. The program shared information about key food issues that impact our health and the environment, specifically regarding toxins in our environment and how overusing antibiotics in animals can affect human health.
In summary, the antibiotics used regularly in animal feeds are the same that require a prescription from your doctor, and giving them to the animals we eat can affect the efficacy of antibiotics given to us when we're sick. There are many studies that suggest that antibiotics will no longer be effective in the near future as bacteria become stronger and antibiotic-resistant due to constantly being exposed to low levels of antibiotics in animals.
