Spread The Flame - NAWBO Membership Contest
Passion fuels your business. It's the fire that drives your
decisions, your risks, and your dreams. But sometimes that fire may sputter and
smoke. We've all been there: The next step seems murky, the business decision
hard, the challenge impossible. For many of us, NAWBO has been a solution in those moments. We talk with fellow
members and they rekindle our fire.
We need to share that
inspirational flame. There are other women business owners out there in our
community who could use this enlightenment from time to time.
Thus the Membership Committee invites you to start thinking
of women business owners who could benefit from joining NAWBO. We invite you to
reach out to them, share what you've gained, and get them to come to our
meetings and seminars.
We will reward those
who spread the flame to others. Bring in a new NAWBO member and you will be
entered into a quarterly drawing for $50
worth of prizes. The prizes may be restaurant gift certificates, free NAWBO
meetings and seminars, and other gifts. At the end of the NAWBO year (June
2011), the members who have brought in the most new members will be entered into
a drawing for a fantastically comfortable desk chair, a $500 donation from
Tricia Burke and Office Environment Company.
How to be counted: Every
NAWBO event at which you bring or attract a prospective member, get one of her
business cards, put your name on the back of it, and drop it in the contest
basket at the sign-in table. No business
card? Fill out an index card with your name, the prospect's name &
business, and her contact info. (We have
your contact info.)
When the prospect
joins our chapter, you are then
entered into the quarterly drawing. Our first quarterly drawing will be at the
Celebration of Entrepreneurship event. (Think of the major name recognition
you'll get there!) Bring in multiple new members - earn multiple entries.
At the end of the year, all the entries for the quarterly
drawings will go into the grand prize drawing. The overall winner will be
announced at our June 2011 meeting.
So go forth and spread the NAWBO flame.

One Ring-Y-Dingy: Membership Calling!
Over the next few months, you may get a call from a very
nice sister NAWBO member. We hope you will take a couple moments to talk with
her and share how your membership experience is going!
Your phone call will come approximately three months before
your membership expires. It will be a mini-survey: How's it going, what have
you liked and disliked, and then a review of all the NAWBO opportunities you've
taken advantage of, such as Masterminds or Minerva, our meetings, our National
events, our Mingler, our educational seminars and our committees.
As you know we've been transitioning from a practically all-volunteer
organization to one led by a professional executive director. In the past, you
may have had an interest or an idea about something, but somehow never
connected. This survey will be a GREAT opportunity to share your thoughts and
ideas with us, to help us improve your Chapter.
Your personal "customer" satisfaction is important to us because
we value you as a member. Not everyone can go out and run a business. It takes
a certain kind of gumption, savvy - and frankly, personal coolness -- to be an
entrepreneur. We like hanging out in NAWBO with cool people like you who are
filled with gumption - and that's why we value your feedback. So when YOU get the
call, please - tell us what you think!

Governor Beshear Lauches Small Business License Plate Design Competition
Gov. Steve Beshear today announced an initiative to help
raise awareness of the impact of small businesses in Kentucky, launching a design competition for
a specialty small business license plate. The competition, which begins
today and runs through Wednesday, Nov.10, 2010, is open to any small
Kentucky-based business with 50 or fewer employees, at least one of which must
be a Kentucky resident. Kentucky
residents not affiliated with a small business can also participate by
partnering with a small business willing to sponsor their submission. There is no fee to submit a design, but the design must be submitted by a qualifying
small business. "More than 90 percent of the employer firms in Kentucky have 50 or
fewer employees," said Gov. Beshear. "These small businesses are
responsible for thousands of jobs that form the backbone of our economy. A small business-themed license plate is a unique way to recognize the
important contributions made by all kinds of small businesses throughout our
Commonwealth." Submitted designs will be reviewed and narrowed to a group
of three to five finalists by a joint committee of Kentucky small business owners and
advocates. The winning design will be selected by the Kentucky Commission
on Small Business Advocacy and submitted to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
for final approval. A complete outline of competition
rules and guidelines is available at www.peakky.org/licenseplate.aspx. "We are excited about this opportunity for a creative
individual or small business to help remind us that small business is big
business in Kentucky," said Cathy Zion, acting chair of the Kentucky Small
Business Advocacy Commission and owner of Zion Publications LLC, a small
business in Louisville. "Not everyone is aware of the huge economic
impact of small businesses in Kentucky. Creating a small business license plate will help all of us focus on the fact
that small business 'drives' our economic engine." License plate designs must be
received no later than Nov. 10, 2010 via CD and mailed to: Commission on Small
Business Advocacy, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, 23rd
Floor, Capital Plaza Tower,
500 Mero Street, Frankfort, Ky., 40601, Attn: Small Business License
Plate Design Competition. Upon completion of the design
competition, the commission will join with Partners for Entrepreneurial
Advancement in Kentucky (PEAK), a private nonprofit organization focused on
smalland micro-business
development in Kentucky,
to collect the 900 applications that must be submitted to the Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet before license plate production can begin. The
proceeds collected from those purchasing a small
business specialty license plate will be used to fund small business and
entrepreneur development programs in Kentucky. The Commission on Small Business Advocacy is an independent
state commission attached to the Cabinet for Economic Development. The
commission acts as an advocate for small business and works to raise the
visibility of small business statewide. More information about the
Commission is available at www.kysba.com.

"More Than Family: Non-Family Executives in the Family Business"
Be sure to bring your non-family executive
with you (if you have one!) Thursday, September 16, 2010 8:30-11:30 a.m. University of Louisville ShelbyHurst Campus
Although the success of
every family business depends on its ability to attract and retain the best
talent available, the idea of putting a non-family member in a leadership
position can seem as foreign as mixing apples with an orange.
Yet, there comes a time in the life of every well-run family-owned business
when adding "non-family" to the mix is absolutely the best thing to
do. What are the best practices when
it comes to maximizing the contributions of non-family executives within
the family business?
On September 16, you're invited to hear international family business
consultant and renowned author Dr. Stephen McClure describe the formula for
blending the best of family interests with non-family talent in this half-day Family
Business Center seminar.
You will hear from two
longstanding non-family executives from prominent regional family
businesses. Dan Rechter of the Rogers Group will also share his
perspective as a fourth generation family member of a family firm that
since 1984 has relied upon the contributions of four consecutive non-family
CEOs.
Takeaways include:
- How to transition to a
non-family CEO
- Compensation and
ownership guidelines for non-family execs
- Best practices in
building relationships among family members and non-family execs
- How non-family
executives can be the solution to tough succession issues
Reservations required:
$25 for FBC members and $40 for their guests; $50 for FBC Professional Advisor
