Masterminds Groups - Don't Miss OutMasterminds is one of the many free programs that our Louisville chapter offers which supports women business owners. It is a group of 7-10 women business owners who form an informal board of advisors with members of the Louisville chapter. The vision is to create productive, interactive groups of women who are encouraged and enriched by participating in the Masterminds process. This program enables mermbers to grow their businesses as they grow in their understanding of themselves and how they do business. Each person brings a unique perspective to the group and benefits from sharing insights into problems and solutions. All members of the group gain greater objectivity, value and a sense of their own power from peer support. If you are a woman business owner, whether you have been in business six months or twenty years, you can benefit from Masterminds. Lean more from the Masterminds page on our web site. If you are interested in joining a Masterminds group or forming a new group, please contact Masterminds Chair, Joe Vary at 491-9738 or Helen Overfield at the NAWBO office 625-0248. |

Interns can play a valuable role in your company's flexible
workforce needs - and help develop future employees and industry talent. Companies of all types and sizes are being
recruited for a new regional internship program, which can deliver free
resources and assistance to your business.
Intern To Earn,
a new initiative launched by Greater Louisville Inc. and the HIRE Education Forum, is aimed at closing the gap between companies in need of fresh talent
and interns looking to gain career experience.
Intern to Earn will develop the talent pool necessary to meet future
regional workforce needs, and connect the next generation of talent to the
26-county Greater Louisville region - including your company!
Whether you have an established internship program or have
never even considered utilizing interns at your company, the Intern To Earn
program has resources to help you. The program and website offer a range of
services for your business, including internship development workshops, support
for businesses with new and existing internship programs, a comprehensive
database of internship openings, professional networking opportunities for interns
you employ, and online tools and resources for businesses and students.
Companies interested in developing internship programs,
strengthening existing programs, and showcasing internship positions to the
nearly 50,000 college students living in the region can engage by:

Interviews with Mayoral Candidate Tyler Allen and Shannon White - April 2010
Tyler Allen is a passionate and enthusiastic young man. When we sat down on Frankfort Avenue outside Heine
Bros. coffee (selfishly so that I could take my new puppy) we had literally 50
- 60 people stop by to talk to Tyler and of course my puppy Rhigley. Tyler kept saying, "I need to get me a
campaign puppy!!"
Tyler like many candidates grew up in Louisville where he
attended Atherton High School, where he was elected student body president. He
went on to graduate from Northwestern University graduating with honors. He then served with Teach for America,
spending two years teaching fourth graders in New Orleans. After returning to Louisville, at age 25 he started his own business, USA Image
Technologies, recognized in 2001 as a Business First Fast
50 Company. In 1995 he married Chenoweth
Stites. They have three school-age children.
Tyler has served on a number of boards across the
community...(you can read more about his business and service on his website
listed at the end of this article).
What Tyler is most famous (or some might say, infamous for)
is his co-founding of the 8664 project, a vision for an alternative to the Ohio River Bridges Project. He is quite passionate about 8664 and even in
the face of considerable opposition from the Courier Journal, the mayor, and
several interest groups; Tyler has continued to champion what he believes is a
balanced, common sense solution for community transportation needs and, more
broadly, a new way of thinking about Louisville's future.
But as Tyler stated, "I'm much more than 8664." Tyler was a
longtime advocate and champion for merger, truly believes in neighborhood
development believing we can learn a great deal from the example of the
Olmstead parks development and as an entrepreneur himself, wants to strengthen
our local economy by instituting cooperation, inclusion and diversity, cutting
out the fat and red-tape.
Tyler's top priorities are:
-
Economic Development: Bring more and better jobs to Metro Louisville,
foster growth in every direction east, west, south and north. Get Government
out of the way to including small, minority, women, veteran owned business
involved in economic projects.
- Neighborhood Revitalization: Empower residents and business owners to be
involved in finding solutions to reclaim their neighborhoods. Build coalitions
that take on solutions and provide them with the resources they need to be
successful.
-
Smart Transportation: Develop plans that include bike lanes,
pedestrian walk-ways, affordable mass-transit, while planning for growth; insuring
decreases in congestion and pollution. Build bridges that make sense for growth
and economic development.
-
Government Transparency: Ensure transparency on how decisions are
made, where money is spent and encourage the brightest minds from across the
community to provide ideas and implement solutions.

------------------------------------------------------
I recently sat down with Mayoral candidate Shannon
White. Shannon was raised in
Louisville. Her Mother is a teacher so
Shannon learned a lot from her Mother about community, giving back and
family. She also instilled in her the
value of owning her own business and being a leader in her community.
Following are some topics we discussed:
As Shannon has walked neighborhoods around the city she
says, "I have fallen in love all over again with Louisville! I am meeting families who are genuinely
hurting. While some candidates are
spouting about their endorsements, I am making my campaign about the people
living in the south end, the west end and the east end. We truly need to unite our community and not
fuel all our energy on developing just the downtown quadrant, but encourage and
engage people from all corners of our vast community!"
As a small women business owner herself, Shannon understands
how hard it is to stay on course with the difficult economy. She knows this first hand and believes that
women are the engine that will turn this economy around. "Women know how collaborate and to work
together to get things accomplished. They are more flexible and willing to work together. Instead of handing
over $950,000 to one large company with no accountability (Cordish), let's give
$9,500 to 10 small to medium local companies to get the work done. We have the talent here; we need to support
the workers here. These investments need
to be intentional and forward thinking. Give tax incentives to local companies to buy equipment that will help
them grow and ad jobs."
Shannon sights our own NAWBO Louisville President Maggie
Payette-Harlow as the perfect example. "Maggie
grew up here; her parents were entrepreneurs and invested in Louisville. Maggie started a small business and has
raised her family here. She is providing
jobs, paying taxes and is an outstanding leader in the community. That's what we need to invest in, people who
are working, living and growing, and giving back!"
Following are the top priorities for Shannon:
- Provide incentives for small businesses to grow.
-
Create solutions to turn-over the over 6000
vacant homes, engaging hurting construction companies to turn them into energy
efficient, safe dwellings where over 1000 women in section 8 housing (on a
waiting list) can move their families.
-
Include the entire community in Metro Government
from all corners, demanding transparency, efficiency and accountability.

When: May 15, 2010

Why: Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana (GSK) will join forces
with Global Environmental Services (GES) to address the issue of recycling
electronic waste (e-waste). Get your community involved by inviting business,

home or business to recycle responsibly, including: inkjet

its electronic waste and
none of it is shipped overseas to third world countries.
How: Utilize your grassroots networking connections and spread
the word! Let's make a difference in our community! Where: E-waste drop off locations
will be in each of the five GSK service centers. Louisville

NAWBO Membership FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions about Membership:
Q. Can I join NAWBO locally and not nationally? A. All memberships go through our National NAWBO office and members must join at both - at the national level and the local chapter level. Take full advantage of all the perks of national and local membership by visiting both websites: www.nawbo.org and www.nawbolouisville.org.
Q. I received communication from national NAWBO that my membership was expiring soon - I think they have my date wrong, how can I find out? A. This is the #1 most frequently asked question and where most misunderstandings about membership arise. Memberships are valid one year from the date a member joined. Renewals are due the month you expire. There is a grace period for renewals (so you don't have to re-join as a new member, as national renewals dues are slightly less), however your date of expiration remains the same - one year from the date you first joined. It is not one year from the date you paid your renewal.
Example: Brenda Business Owner's New Year's resolution was to network more, so she joined NAWBO online January 1, 2008. Her membership expired Dec 31, 2008. January 2009 came along and she was more focused on her New Year's resolution to hold weekly staff meetings with her employees, and renewing her membership Dec 2008 simply slipped her mind. She attended a NAWBO meeting in March 2009 and it prompted her to send in her renewal. Her renewal was 3 months "late", but it was during the grace period. The due date was Dec 31, 2008, even though she paid it March 2009.
Her next expiration date will NOT be March 2010 - one year from when she paid her renewal - it was still Dec 2009!
You can contact the local NAWBO office (502) 625-0248 or the National office 1-800-55NAWBO for specific clarification of your membership.
Q. What are the membership fees to join NAWBO? A. There are 3 basic fee structures:
- $ 50 local + $100 national = $150 for emerging businesses
- $100 local + $150 national = $250 for established businesses
- $150 local + $150 national = $300 for supporting members/non-business owners.
There are other membership options (retired, student, sustaining, etc.) See details on our web site.
Q. I have a question about my membership - who do I contact? A. Local - Helen Overfield, Executive Director of NAWBO (502) 625-0248 director@nawbolouisville.org National - Joyce Lee 1-800-55NAWBO or memberservices@nawbo.org
Q. My contact information has changed - who do I contact? A. You can log onto the national website www.nawbo.org and update your profile and your company's profile. Contact the NAWBO office at info@nawbolouisville.org to change information locally or to obtain your local log on information. Please update your contact information if it changes, so you receive all the communication from NAWBO! Q. How do I get a list of members? A. Electronic membership lists are emailed quarterly to all members. You can also contact the NAWBO office to request one. Members are also listed on the Louisville NAWBO web site and the National NAWBO web site by their last name. Q. Are employees at my business members of NAWBO? A. National and local by-laws dictate that membership in the organization is in the individual member's name - not in the name of the company. Therefore each person must maintain their own membership. You may bring a guest or a prospective member at non-member rates.

Create Your Own NAWBO Sponsorship Package
NAWBO depends heavily on our partnerships with corporate sponsors. Without them we would not be able to support the programs we offer our members and the business community. In return, our sponsors enjoy visibility among women business owners and community leaders.
In addition to the EPIC sponsorships and chapter sponsorships at the levels of Visionary ($15,000), Leadership ($10,000), Champion ($5,000) and Supporting ($3,000), our chapter recently created a sponsorship program called Create Your Own Package. Any business can take advantage of the visibility offered by these options.
Create Your Own Package Sponsorships: $1,500 Meeting and educational seminar sponsor $1,500 Presenting sponsor of EPIC silent auction, includes booth $1,000 E-newsletter sponsor, with linked ad and two company articles for 1 year. $1,000 Printed newsletter sponsor, with ½-page ad and article in each issue for one year/ 6
issues $ 500 Educational material sponsor $ 500 Company logo on website with link $ 500 Postage sponsor $ 500 Food & beverage sponsor for event, with visibility on promotional materials $ 280 Table at annual signature event $ 250 Half a corporate table (4 seats) at EPIC luncheon and awards ceremony $ 250 Featured article in E-newsletter or printed newsletter $ 200 One-year participation in Buy NAWBO 1st Program $ 200 Promotional or information material at a NAWBO meeting $ 150 Ad in E-newsletter
| Do You Have News for the e-Newsletter?
Have you been in the News recently? Is there announcement for your business? Are you chairing a charity event? Let us know when you have news about you or your business?
In an effort to keep the eNewsletter fresh and informative, we are instituting new guidelines for copy submissions regarding members' business-promotion articles. Copy content should not exceed 250 words for these types of articles. By limiting the word count, we will be able to feature more members' information.
Keep those articles coming in, as it is great to share your company news with the NAWBO membership!
The deadline for the January issue is May 20, 2010. Send your articles about promotions, news coverage, accomplishments, grand openings, opportunities, etc. to director@nawbolouisville.org or lesa@xstrememedia.com.
