Masterminds Groups - Don't Miss Out

Masterminds is one of the many free programs that our Louisville chapter offers which supports women business owners. It is a group of 7-10 women business owners who form an informal board of advisors with members of the Louisville chapter.  The vision is to create productive, interactive groups of women who are encouraged and enriched by participating in the Masterminds process.

This program enables mermbers to grow their businesses as they grow in their understanding of themselves and how they do business.  Each person brings a unique perspective to the group and benefits from sharing insights into problems and solutions.  All members of the group gain greater objectivity, value and a sense of their own power from peer support.

If you are a woman business owner, whether you have been in business six months or twenty years, you can benefit from Masterminds.  Lean more from the Masterminds page on our web site.

If you are interested in joining a Masterminds group or forming a new group, please contact Masterminds Chair, Joe Vary at 491-9738 or Helen Overfield at the NAWBO office 625-0248.
Intern To Earn Program

Interns can play a valuable role in your company's flexible workforce needs - and help develop future employees and industry talent.  Companies of all types and sizes are being recruited for a new regional internship program, which can deliver free resources and assistance to your business.

Intern To Earn, a new initiative launched by Greater Louisville Inc. and the HIRE Education Forum, is aimed at closing the gap between companies in need of fresh talent and interns looking to gain career experience.  Intern to Earn will develop the talent pool necessary to meet future regional workforce needs, and connect the next generation of talent to the 26-county Greater Louisville region - including your company!

Whether you have an established internship program or have never even considered utilizing interns at your company, the Intern To Earn program has resources to help you. The program and website offer a range of services for your business, including internship development workshops, support for businesses with new and existing internship programs, a comprehensive database of internship openings, professional networking opportunities for interns you employ, and online tools and resources for businesses and students.

Companies interested in developing internship programs, strengthening existing programs, and showcasing internship positions to the nearly 50,000 college students living in the region can engage by:
  • Attending free regional workshops on developing and executing an internship program. Call (502) 625-0019 for upcoming dates and locations across the region.
  • Visiting www.InternToEarn.com to download free employer resources, including an internship program toolkit.
  • Posting spring, summer and fall internships at no cost on the Intern To Earn website: www.InternToEarn.com.
Intern To Earn is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through a WIRED65 grant. In 2008, WIRED65 and community leaders studied the workforce attraction and development needs of the 26-county Greater Louisville region in terms of talent, innovation and quality of place.  Internships were identified as an important component to a strong workforce capable of developing and retaining new-economy jobs.

Businesses interested in learning more about the Inter To Earn program can contact Myra Campbell at (502) 625-0019 or MCampbell@GreaterLouisville.com.

Interview with Mayoral Candidate Hal Heiner - March 2010

Hal Heiner is one of 2 Republican candidates running for Louisville Mayor.  He has served on the Metro Council for 7 years.  He attended University of Louisville and acquired a degree in Engineering.  Hal has lived in Louisville for 45 years, and has been married to his wife Sheila for 32 years. They have 4 children.

The following are the goals that Hal sees as key to being the next Louisville Mayor:

  1. Job creation - Hal feels that we have not been the best stewards when it comes to opportunities to grow Louisville.  Over the last 8 years, Hal states that Nashville has grown adding approximately 50,000 new jobs; Indianapolis has grown in the same period adding 50,000 new jobs, while Louisville in the same timeframe has lost 2,000 jobs.  Hal stated that not only do we need to provide incentives for businesses to locate in Louisville but he will also bring the following:

    • Build strong relationships with key decision makers and stakeholders,
    • Cut out the regulatory "red tape" that inhibits zoning and creates delays for businesses to build or expand
    • Make access to Metro Government zoning and economic development easier and more streamline by creating :
      a)      Electronic plan submission available online,
      b)      Transparency in contract procurement and awards,
      c)       Bringing a change to the contracting culture,
      d)      Continuing Education available to contractors and sub-contractors.

     2.  Government Transparency - Hal wishes to bring honest and open transparency to how Metro
Government works.  He sees this as a way for Women Business Owners to become aware of
more ways to do business with the city as well as to have greater access to city/private
          contracts.

     3.  Strengthening the unity between downtown and suburban neighborhoods. Hal believes that
merger created a distinct disconnect between those living in the suburbs and those who live
and work downtown.  He plans to implement a plan to strengthen those bonds.

     4.  Addressing the number of abandoned homes.  There are over 400 homes that are now owned
by Metro Louisville that have been abandoned.  Such dwellings lend themselves to illegal drug
houses, they bring down the value of their neighbors homes and the neighborhood and cause
safety issues.  Hal believes that with federal money and grants that these homes can be:

    • Converted to affordable housing
    • Torn down to make room for parks and green space
    • Torn down and divide the land among bordering neighbors.

Lastly, Hal hopes to increase volunteerism in our city.  While we are a generous city, he hopes to make more opportunities available for citizens to get involved to improve their own city.
For more information on Hal Heiner, go to:  www.HalForMayor.com .

Watch for additional Mayoral Candidate interviews in future newsletters.

NAWBO FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions about Membership:

Q. Can I join NAWBO locally and not nationally?
A. All memberships go through our National NAWBO office and members must join at both - at the national level and the local chapter level.  Take full advantage of all the perks of national and local membership by visiting both websites: www.nawbo.org and www.nawbolouisville.org.

Q. I received communication from national NAWBO that my membership was expiring soon - I think they have my date wrong, how can I find out?
A. This is the #1 most frequently asked question and where most misunderstandings about membership arise.  Memberships are valid one year from the date a member joined. Renewals are due the month you expire. There is a grace period for renewals (so you don't have to re-join as a new member, as national renewals dues are slightly less), however your date of expiration remains the same - one year from the date you first joined. It is not one year from the date you paid your renewal.

Example: Brenda Business Owner's New Year's resolution was to network more, so she joined NAWBO online January 1, 2008. Her membership expired Dec 31, 2008. January 2009 came along and she was more focused on her New Year's resolution to hold weekly staff meetings with her employees, and renewing her membership Dec 2008 simply slipped her mind. She attended a NAWBO meeting in March 2009 and it prompted her to send in her renewal. Her renewal was 3 months "late", but it was during the grace period. The due date was Dec 31, 2008, even though she paid it March 2009.

Her next expiration date will NOT be March 2010 - one year from when she paid her renewal - it was still Dec 2009!

You can contact the local NAWBO office (502) 625-0248 or the National office 1-800-55NAWBO for specific clarification of your membership.

Q.  What are the membership fees to join NAWBO?
A.  There are 3 basic fee structures:
  • $  50 local + $100 national = $150 for emerging businesses
  • $100 local + $150 national = $250 for established businesses
  • $150 local + $150 national = $300 for supporting members/non-business owners.
There are other membership options (retired, student, sustaining, etc.) See details on our web site.

Q. I have a question about my membership - who do I contact?
A. Local - Helen Overfield, Executive Director of NAWBO (502) 625-0248 director@nawbolouisville.org
National - Joyce Lee 1-800-55NAWBO or memberservices@nawbo.org

Q. My contact information has changed - who do I contact?
A. You can log onto the national website www.nawbo.org and update your profile and your company's profile. Contact the NAWBO office at info@nawbolouisville.org to change information locally or to obtain your local log on information. Please update your contact information if it changes, so you receive all the communication from NAWBO!

Q. How do I get a list of members?
A. Electronic membership lists are emailed quarterly to all members. You can also contact the NAWBO office to request one. Members are also listed on the Louisville NAWBO web site and the National NAWBO web site by their last name.

Q. Are employees at my business members of NAWBO?
A. National and local by-laws dictate that membership in the organization is in the individual member's name - not in the name of the company. Therefore each person must maintain their own membership. You may bring a guest or a prospective member at non-member rates.

Do You Have News for the e-Newsletter?

Have you been in the News recently?  Is there announcement for your business?  Are you chairing a charity event?  Let us know when you have news about you or your business?

In an effort to keep the eNewsletter fresh and informative, we are instituting new guidelines for copy submissions regarding members' business-promotion articles. Copy content should not exceed 250 words for these types of articles. By limiting the word count, we will be able to feature more members' information.

Keep those articles coming in, as it is great to share your company news with the NAWBO membership!

The deadline for the January issue is  April 20, 2010. Send your articles about promotions, news coverage, accomplishments, grand openings, opportunities, etc. to director@nawbolouisville.org or lesa@xstrememedia.com.
