Entrepreneurial Networking Seminars

Are you a small business owner looking to make new contacts for growth? Are you considering starting a small business? If so, you'll want to attend a free Entrepreneurial Networking Seminar hosted by WIRED65, the U.S. Department of Labor's regional workforce development coalition.

The half-day seminar will allow participants to network; gain advice from business owners and development advisors; learn about state and federal organizations offering business services; and attend break-out sessions on marketing strategies, franchising and business mentoring.

NAWBO's President-Elect Lesa Siebert, President of Xstreme Media, LLC, Executive Director Helen Overfield and Secretary Cindy Eagles, President of MP Videos, will be panelists at the seminars and will represent NAWBO as a service provider.

One regional seminar remains:

Hardin County
March 18, 1 - 5 p.m.
Elizabethtown Tourism & Convention Bureau
Elizabethtown, Kentucky

Workshop participation is free, and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information and to register, visit www.wired65.org.

In addition to the Entrepreneurial Networing Seminars, the Wired 65 Quantum Fund Initiative Grant will sponsor additional training opportunities for aspiring and existing business owners during the Spring and Summer.

Entrepreneurial Leadership is a high value 3-day training course made available through the Wired 65 grant - with tuition paid by Wired 65. This practical course is designed to help regional entrepreneurs and small business owners gain an in-depth understanding of the essential characteristics of leaders, while instilling new leadership skills and defining the meaning and role of a true "entrepreneur."  The course will encourage leadership and region thinking, while providing awareness of the many federal and local resources available to assist small business owners and future entrepreneurs.  The course will also introduce and explain the critical factors essential for the success of any new venture.  Download the application.

Individual Business Assessments are also being offered to small businesses in the region on a complimentary basis.  An objective of the grant initiative aims to strengthen the Region as an environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship.  One way to meet this objective is to encourage and support the strategic development of existing small businesses.   This unique offer of individual business assessments extends an opportunity to small business owners in the
Wired65 Region to have their enterprise evaluated by an experienced business consultant at no cost.

OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR VOICES TO BE HEARD

As the voice of America's more than 10 million women-owned businesses, NAWBO is uniquely positioned to provide incisive commentary on issues of importance to today's women business owners, from job market trends to access to credit to health care.

That's why it is no surprise that-driven by our far-reaching communications platform that includes public relations, social media, publications and more-NAWBO has recently experienced an increase in journalist inquiries for NAWBO leaders and members who are willing to share their perspective, challenges and success stories in today's current economic environment. At the same time, our NAWBO National communications team is always seeking great, inspirational stories that help women everywhere to power their dreams.

If you have a unique perspective or story to tell about one or more of the following topics, please send it to publications@nawbo.orgfor consideration. NAWBO will keep you in mind as we work with the media and plan content for our own upcoming communications.

TOPICS
Access to credit: What are your thoughts on President Obama's push to expand credit to small businesses and in what ways are you gaining access to credit other than traditional bank loans?

Job market trends: Have you hired lately and do you think this is a sign of economic recovery? Or have you made the tough decision to let employees go and think the recovery is still a long way off?

The power of women: Studies of past recessions have shown women-owned businesses tend to fare better; do you think this is true even today? If so, what makes women better equipped to face challenges like we're currently seeing?

Employee benefits: Have you put your company's 401k program on hold to help keep your business afloat in the current economy? Are you offering anything unique to help motivate and retain staff?

Business/NAWBO resources: What resources have been most beneficial to you and your business during the current economy and why?

Masterminds Groups - Don't Miss Out

Masterminds is one of the many free programs that our Louisville chapter offers which supports women business owners. It is a group of 7-10 women business owners who form an informal board of advisors with members of the Louisville chapter.  The vision is to create productive, interactive groups of women who are encouraged and enriched by participating in the Masterminds process.

This program enables mermbers to grow their businesses as they grow in their understanding of themselves and how they do business.  Each person brings a unique perspective to the group and benefits from sharing insights into problems and solutions.  All members of the group gain greater objectivity, value and a sense of their own power from peer support.

If you are a woman business owner, whether you have been in business six months or twenty years, you can benefit from Masterminds.  Lean more from the Masterminds page on our web site.

If you are interested in joining a Masterminds group or forming a new group, please contact Masterminds Chair, Joe Vary at 491-9738 or Helen Overfield at the NAWBO office 625-0248.
Intern To Earn Program

Interns can play a valuable role in your company's flexible workforce needs - and help develop future employees and industry talent.  Companies of all types and sizes are being recruited for a new regional internship program, which can deliver free resources and assistance to your business.

Intern To Earn, a new initiative launched by Greater Louisville Inc. and the HIRE Education Forum, is aimed at closing the gap between companies in need of fresh talent and interns looking to gain career experience.  Intern to Earn will develop the talent pool necessary to meet future regional workforce needs, and connect the next generation of talent to the 26-county Greater Louisville region - including your company!

Whether you have an established internship program or have never even considered utilizing interns at your company, the Intern To Earn program has resources to help you. The program and website offer a range of services for your business, including internship development workshops, support for businesses with new and existing internship programs, a comprehensive database of internship openings, professional networking opportunities for interns you employ, and online tools and resources for businesses and students.

Companies interested in developing internship programs, strengthening existing programs, and showcasing internship positions to the nearly 50,000 college students living in the region can engage by:
  • Attending free regional workshops on developing and executing an internship program. Call (502) 625-0019 for upcoming dates and locations across the region.
  • Visiting www.InternToEarn.com to download free employer resources, including an internship program toolkit.
  • Posting spring, summer and fall internships at no cost on the Intern To Earn website: www.InternToEarn.com.
Intern To Earn is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through a WIRED65 grant. In 2008, WIRED65 and community leaders studied the workforce attraction and development needs of the 26-county Greater Louisville region in terms of talent, innovation and quality of place.  Internships were identified as an important component to a strong workforce capable of developing and retaining new-economy jobs.

Businesses interested in learning more about the Inter To Earn program can contact Myra Campbell at (502) 625-0019 or MCampbell@GreaterLouisville.com.

Kentucky Women's Health Registry

On another note, our 2009 year will be ending March 15th. Currently 1200 new women have participated in the Registry this year. That means we still need 1300 women to take the survey in order to reach our goal of 2500. So once again, we need your help. When we continue to meet the goals that have been set you continue to send a strong message that women's health and the funding for this program is important to Kentucky. Most women who join the Registry do so because a friend, family member or co-worker suggested they join. There are lots of women that you know that I will never meet to tell about the Registry. Each woman has a unique story to tell and represents hundreds of other women just like them.

Traditionally, most health research has focused on men. Researchers are now discovering greater than expected differences between men's and women's health. To help researchers improve the understanding of women's health, the Kentucky Women's Health Registry at the University of Kentucky needs women who are over 18 and who live in Kentucky to complete a confidential health survey once a year.

The survey can be taken online at http://www.kywomensregistry.com or by calling 800 929 2320 to request a paper version of the survey. The information is used by researchers at UK and at U of L to better understand how women's health changes over time. They would like to know how stress, who we take care of, where we live and where we work, affects our health.

Your personal identifying information is not shared with anyone and is stored seperately from your answers. Your name and address is only used to remind you to take the survey again next year, to send you quarterly newsletters about what is being learned from the Registry and to tell you about other forms of research you may also be interested in. The Registry also has a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institute of Health which protects your information in all circumstances, even from legal proceedings. Check out this link to learn more: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/coc/background.htm .

NAWBO FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions about Membership:

Q. Can I join NAWBO locally and not nationally?
A. All memberships go through our National NAWBO office and members must join at both - at the national level and the local chapter level.  Take full advantage of all the perks of national and local membership by visiting both websites: www.nawbo.org and www.nawbolouisville.org.

Q. I received communication from national NAWBO that my membership was expiring soon - I think they have my date wrong, how can I find out?
A. This is the #1 most frequently asked question and where most misunderstandings about membership arise.  Memberships are valid one year from the date a member joined. Renewals are due the month you expire. There is a grace period for renewals (so you don't have to re-join as a new member, as national renewals dues are slightly less), however your date of expiration remains the same - one year from the date you first joined. It is not one year from the date you paid your renewal.

Example: Brenda Business Owner's New Year's resolution was to network more, so she joined NAWBO online January 1, 2008. Her membership expired Dec 31, 2008. January 2009 came along and she was more focused on her New Year's resolution to hold weekly staff meetings with her employees, and renewing her membership Dec 2008 simply slipped her mind. She attended a NAWBO meeting in March 2009 and it prompted her to send in her renewal. Her renewal was 3 months "late", but it was during the grace period. The due date was Dec 31, 2008, even though she paid it March 2009.

Her next expiration date will NOT be March 2010 - one year from when she paid her renewal - it was still Dec 2009!

You can contact the local NAWBO office (502) 625-0248 or the National office 1-800-55NAWBO for specific clarification of your membership.

Q.  What are the membership fees to join NAWBO?
A.  There are 3 basic fee structures:
  • $  50 local + $100 national = $150 for emerging businesses
  • $100 local + $150 national = $250 for established businesses
  • $150 local + $150 national = $300 for supporting members/non-business owners.
There are other membership options (retired, student, sustaining, etc.) See details on our web site.

Q. I have a question about my membership - who do I contact?
A. Local - Helen Overfield, Executive Director of NAWBO (502) 625-0248 director@nawbolouisville.org
National - Joyce Lee 1-800-55NAWBO or memberservices@nawbo.org

Q. My contact information has changed - who do I contact?
A. You can log onto the national website www.nawbo.org and update your profile and your company's profile. Contact the NAWBO office at info@nawbolouisville.org to change information locally or to obtain your local log on information. Please update your contact information if it changes, so you receive all the communication from NAWBO!

Q. How do I get a list of members?
A. Electronic membership lists are emailed quarterly to all members. You can also contact the NAWBO office to request one. Members are also listed on the Louisville NAWBO web site and the National NAWBO web site by their last name.

Q. Are employees at my business members of NAWBO?
A. National and local by-laws dictate that membership in the organization is in the individual member's name - not in the name of the company. Therefore each person must maintain their own membership. You may bring a guest or a prospective member at non-member rates.
