Free Online Course - Strengthening Young Families Experiencing Homelessness

The National Center on Family Homelessness presents a free, online training series this fall for providers working with young homeless families. The course will give service providers and administrators an in-depth understanding of the housing, developmental, and clinical needs of young families. The goals of the course are to foster knowledge and skills in assessment and intervention to improve outcomes. Starting on October 10, the course consists of six weekly sessions, with each session building on the last. Participants will expand their understanding of developmental stages, learn about the impact of trauma and homelessness on young mothers and children, and develop strategies for improving services for young homeless families. A total of six continuing education credits (CEUs) will be provided through NASW. Learn more and register today

The National Center is a proud partner of Four Oaks, one of five agencies nationally that has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The project, Partners United for Supportive Housing Cedar Rapids, will work to retain family unity, provide stable housing, and improve family functioning and well-being for children who are in, or at-risk of entering, the child welfare system. The National Center will provide comprehensive training and technical assistance and support evaluation efforts for this project. Read the press release

Stories: Need for Long Term Stability

Carrie used to work at a child care center, but recently lost her job. She has an 18-month old baby. She has been looking for a new job, but lost her home because she cannot afford to pay the rent. She also cannot afford to pay her car insurance, so she is unable to drive her baby to daycare. She finds that it is hard to look for a job while also caring for her baby. Carries moved into a shelter and needs support so she can find a job and pay for car insurance and child care to secure long-term stability for her and her baby. This story first appeared in the Florida Plan to End Child Homelessness.
