Ending Child Homelessness in Mississippi - Event at the State Capitol

Boy looking up sadOn March 24, the Mississippi Campaign to End Child Homelessness held an information session at the State Capitol for legislators and public officials on the needs of homeless children and families across the state.  The Mississippi Plan to End Child Homelessness makes a number of recommendations about state and local policies and plans to address the needs of Mississippi's homeless children and their families.  One of the primary goals of the Mississippi Campaign is to raise awareness about these solutions and inspire others to take action.  Learn more about the Mississippi Plan and CampaignMS Campaign on Facebook.

Update: New Mexico Interagency Council on Homelessness

Mom and Daughter RenLast November, the New Mexico Campaign to End Child Homelessness and the state's Children, Youth and Families Department released Ending Child and Family Homelessness in New Mexico at a hearing before the State Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee.  One of the recommendations in the report is to establish a  New Mexico Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH) charged with writing and implementing a 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness that includes a strong focus on the needs of homeless children and families.  This month, both the House and Senate voted to pass House Joint Memorial 22, proposed by Representatives Bill O'Neill and John Ryan, requesting the Governor and Legislative Council to create a New Mexico ICH.  Our thanks to the New Mexico Legislature for supporting an ICH in the state!  Learn more about the New Mexico Campaign
mom and sonStories: Overcrowded and Overwhelmed

Jessica is a 39 year-old mother with two sons age 13 and 14, and a daughter age five.  Her family has been homeless for over a year and has been on waiting lists for shelters that will accept teenage boys.  After fleeing domestic violence, Jessica and her children lived with relatives in an overcrowded two-bedroom apartment and were asked to leave shortly after moving in.  They had no choice but to live in their car until finally being accepted into a shelter.  Jessica feels her family is stable now for the first time in awhile, but she fears the trauma of being homeless has affected her children.  They attend school regularly, but they are behind in their studies and are having discipline problems in school.  Jessica is hopeful for the future, but she sees a long road ahead before her family can be in a home of their own.  This story first appeared in the Georgia Plan to End Child Homelessness.
