So, your kids are at college with their
brand new computers:
NOW WHAT?
- When to see campus IT: Go there first when your computer isn't working correctly, because you usually need it fixed fast and some college repair shops will give you a loaner. IT may be a free service provided by the college. If you bought the computer from the college bookstore, it may have come with a maintenance plan. If the repair is pricey/ or ends up being a hardware issue and the computer is less than 12 months old it is still under warranty and the repair should be covered by that, or you may have listened to our advice to college students and purchased an extended warranty. Campus IT should be able to advise your student on how to deal with a warranty repair issue.
- How to get cheap software: Microsoft, Adobe and other major software companies offer deep discounts to college students. You can often save hundreds of dollars purchasing high end software through your college or college bookstore, if you are a college student.
- Illegal downloading: Illegal downloading on college networks can be dangerous. Often these networks are able to monitor suspicious download and upload activity. Luckily, we have pandora.com and spotify.com as free, legal alternatives!
- Back it up!: Don't spend your free time crying to Campus IT or your poetry professor. In college, every assignment should be backed up to an external harddrive, flashdrive, or mozy.com. Worth every penny (and extra hour of sleep)!
Helpful computer accessories:
- Accidents happen in life, and they multiply in college. Get a keyboard cover to keep coffee, Redbull, water, and (for those upper classmen!) beer from drowning your motherboard.
- We also suggest mice that plug into laptops
- Laptop locks: Don't fall prey to asking a stranger to watch your computer in the library! That's how many have lost their computers.
Remember, we can always remote in to help your student or check the computer when they are home for fall break or
the holidays.
