Mozy vs. External Hard Drives
We've all suffered the punishment of not backing up our files properly and regularly. TMC2 always reminds our customers to back up their data, but what does this really mean for you? There are two major options: Mozy, an online and remote backup service, and external hard drives.
External hard drives might be more cost effective, as a new hard drive is around $130, while Mozy costs $5.99 a month for up to 50 GB of data and $9.99 a month for larger amounts of data (with one month free if you sign up for a year). This is $110 dollars for a year of Mozy vs. $130 for an external hard drive that should last much longer. So, what's the big difference? Mozy stores your data in a different location. If something happens to your home or office, you can access your data from any computer or your phone. With an external hard drive, you may use an automatic back up program, and so your hard drive will be plugged in all the time. If you are hit with a power surge, you are going to lose the hard drive along with the computer. If you don't keep the hard drive plugged in, you need to remember to plug it in and back up your data. 9 out of 10 of our clients who use an external hard drive to back up, aren't backing up on a regular basis and aren't backing up what they think they are backing up. The big advantage to an external hard drive is that it backs up your data fast and restores your data much faster than uploading and downloading from Mozy.
The ideal back up strategy is to use both: back up to a hard drive and back up with Mozy. If you are only going to use one strategy, we recommend Mozy!

The Smith family has one of TMC Squared's handsomest dog friends! Saber is not only cute, he's also musical. Carrie Smith is one of Glen Ellyn's most beloved piano teachers (and is happy to take new students, humans preferred!).
