Here are some tips for troubleshooting a slow computer
-
Is it your computer or your internet connection? Are other computers in the household/office slow on the internet as well? If they are, test your speed. You can go to our website and click on the Speed Test link to get download and upload speeds. Then, once armed with your download and upload speeds. call your internet service provider and ask them to test your line (AT&T) or modem (Cable company). They will take you more seriously if you are call prepared with your speed numbers.
-
Your internet service provider will probably want you to bypass your router by plugging directly into the modem. If your speed improves, this is an indication that you may have a problem with your router. Routers and modems generally have a lifespan of 4-5 years.
-
If it is not an internet speed problem, it may be your computer. Scan for viruses.
-
Right click on My Computer, Properties. How much Ram do you have? If your operating system is XP, you may need at least 1 GB of RAM to run your programs. Vista and Windows 7: at least 2 GB of RAM.
- Click on your Start button, type "msconfig" in the dialogue box, click on the Start up tab. This is a list of every program that starts up and runs in the background. Are there any programs that you can turn off? Uncheck those boxes.
