Computer Care Checklist

The very basic in computer care includes
  • Surge Protector... Your computer and printer should be plugged into a surge protector. Make sure you unplug both the surge protector and ethernet cables during electrical storms
  • Virus protection... You must have good, up to date, working virus protection. Right now we recommend AVAST. Nothing is fool proof anymore... there are no guarantees
  • Make sure you are up to date with your Microsoft updates. It helps the programs on your computer work better and it adds to the security of your computer
  • Password protect your computer if you don't want anyone else using your computer.
  • Back up... You should be backing up any data, pictures, music you care about... we prefer Mozy online back up service because it's automatic,
    secure, offsite and reasonably priced. If something happens to your house, your data, pictures and music are still safe
  • If you have a wireless network, make sure it is secure. That means you need a password to get onto the network.

 If you are thinking of replacing your PC with a Mac, here are some things to consider
 
  • A big advantage to a Mac is that they don't get viruses the way PCs do
  •  Macs are well built and their hardware is reliable
  •  Apple offers an excellent warranty and outstanding service.
  •  The big advantage to PCs is that they are generally less expensive, often half the price of a Mac.
  •  The software you have for your PC, ie: Microsoft Office, Quicken, Quickbooks, Games., probably will not work on your Mac. You will have to replace the software with Mac compatible software.
  • Many businesses have custom software that only works on PC's.
  • Many of our college business majors have traded in their Macs for a PC because they need to use Microsoft Access and there is no compatible Mac software for this program.
  • Many grade school and Jr Highs only have PC computer labs.
