Manage your Internet Connection

One of our most common service calls is to troubleshoot internet connection problems. Here are some basic questions we will ask you when you call for help.  Knowing the answers to these questions can save you time and money.

Have you checked to make sure all your connections are secure?
Is there power to your modem and router?  Are there lights blinking? Are they all
geen?
Have you tried restarting your modem, router, and computer in that order?
Is there just one computer that can't access the internet or are all the computers in your home or office offline?
Is the offline computer(s) plugged directly into a router or modem or is it on a wireless network?  If it is on a wireless network, will it connect to the internet if you plug it in directly to the router or modem?
Who is your Internet Service Provider? Are they currently experiencing outages in the area?
What kind of modem/router do you have? How old is it?
Is your network secure?  Do you know the password to your network?  Many of our clients don't know the password to their network.  Knowing your password can make the difference between support over the phone to help you reset your network and a service call to reset your network.  Guess which one will cost you more.

What's coming?
 Windows 7 is coming.
What's going?
Microsoft has pulled mainstream support from Windows XP.
What does this mean to you?
It means you need to have a pretty good reason to buy a new computer with Windows XP.  We have a few clients that have highly specialized and very expensive software that can only run on XP.  It's important to these clients to have an XP option. The vast majority of our clients will need to prepare themselves to "let go" of XP when the time comes to upgrade their computers.
Windows 7 will be released in the fall.  We have been testing it on one of our computers for several months. Here's what we like:
  • It's faster than Vista
  • That very annoying Vista User Account Control that asks permission for EVERYTHING can be modified.
  • It has the same excellent security that Vista offers
  • The driver compatibility problems are drastically reduced with the introduction of a "driver compatibility mode"

To our XP users: Microsoft will still offer support for XP on a fee basis and to it's partners.  TMC Squared is a Microsoft Partner and will continue to receive support on behalf of our clients, but when the time comes to upgrade, we will be there to support you through the "letting go" process.

As promised, we are featuring some of our favorite pets of some of our favorite clients each month. Don't be shy! Send us your pet's picture.

Walter belongs to the Reifel family. He's a great old lab who never fails to bring us some token of affection when we come to visit! Sue swears he has declared his love to her but Laurie Reifel says he's a bit of player and may be toying with her affections.
