A networking organization I belong to, eWomenNetwork, had their annual convention in Dallas this month. I spent four days with 3,000 amazing women from throughout the U.S. and Canada.  We listened to incredible speakers, shared professional ideas, received support, and had a lot of fun!
 
One of the speakers talked about our "emotional compass" which is readjusting throughout the day.  Our compass registers the mood of the five people we spend the most time with.  In other words, if you surround yourself with negative people, how do you think you will feel by the end of the day? Or, if you surround yourself with positive, energetic people, how do you think you will feel by the end of the day?
 
According to the psychologist, Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, emotions are contagious and spread from one person to another much like a cold. Our brains contain "mirror neurons" that fire in or out of synch with the people around us. The more connected we are with someone emotionally, the greater influence they have on us.  Do you want to "catch" their emotions?
 
I invite you to take a look at the five people in your life you spend the most time with (customers, clients, colleagues, employees, friends, family).  What is your impact on their emotional compass?  What can you do to improve your interaction with them?  How can you surround yourself with relationships that support your goals and dreams?
