Greetings!

Welcome to summer! Finally! Hopefully you are enjoying the long-awaited sun as much as we are with your dogs! Summer definitely takes our outdoor playtime up a notch. We let you in on the fun and what to be aware of in our Heard at the Hydrant section. Occasionally summer fun can mean summer bugs, such as Giardia. This month's Pup Smarts gives you tips on what to do when your dog has an upset stomach and how to know when that trip to the vet is really necessary. And if your dog has diarrhea or is exhibiting any other symptoms of illness, please keep him at home to recover. Better for your dog, better for our other ones. But first, if you haven't yet been introduced to the finer points of our website, read In the Zone to learn what wagzone.ca can do for you. Have fun!

Boo-Boo Belly

If your dog doesn't appear to have any other symptoms of illness, you don't necessarily have to run to the vet. First, wait 12 hours and:
  • Take away all food and water to allow the irritation to subside.   If your dog is otherwise healthy, you don't need to worry about dehydration over such a short period of time but if he seems thirsty you can let your pup drink small amounts of water. A big drink of water or large meal would likely continue the upset.
  • Offer a bland meal  If after 24 hours the diarrhea has stopped, you can offer your pup a simple meal of cooked rice and plain scrambled eggs which is easy on their digestive system. Scramble the eggs without salt, pepper or milk. You can also add drained cooked hamburger, but make sure to keep the meal bland. Make sure it's cool before you serve it.
  • Watch for symptoms

Keep an eye out for any change in behavior and activity levels and any new symptoms.

See Your Vet If...

  • vomiting or diarrhea persists past two days
  • there is blood in either the vomit or the diarrhea
  • your dog is both vomiting AND has diarrhea
  • vomit looks and smells like poop or is projectile
  • vomiting is sporadic and doesn't correspond to meals
  • you have reason to believe your dog has ingested a poison (like antifreeze)
  • your dog vomits often over a short period of time
  • your dog's stomach is bloated or he/she tries to vomit but can't
  • your dog is listless or showing other signs of illness or distress (i.e. pain, fever)
  • your dog appears to be losing weight

Hot (and Occasionally Muddy) Fun in the Summertime

Lucy Loving the WaterWell look at that. Summer decided to show up after all. The hot weather is upon us and it means lots of fun in the sun - and water - for Wag Zone pups. During our outside playtimes, we make sure to keep the dogs nice and cool with plenty of shade, drinking water, pools, sprinklers and misty hose-downs. They are having an outright blast in the wet and warm fun.

As always, we will work to make sure your dogs go home as clean and dry as possible, but our top priority is their comfort and safety and cool is our goal! If, however, your pet needs to be perfectly dry and pleasantly coiffed by pick up time, please do let us know when you drop them off in the morning and we will keep him or her back with the indoor dogs during the outside fun time. Either that or we can always give your dog a bath after the fun if you so desire.

Farewell Steve

SteveOn August 4, Wag Zone lost one of our favourite dogs, Steve. Steve passed away in the arms of his loving parents after a prolonged decline. Steve was famous, not only for his name (whenever he'd walk through the door we'd all say Steeeeve!) but for his wide smile and happy woofs. He was always in charge of keeping the young 'uns in line with his gentle but no-nonsense barks, which they always heeded. I will always remember Steve's entrances. So often we would forget to check him into the computer because we would be too busy greeting our smiling, happy giant. You will be missed dear Steve. Thank you for bringing your spirit into our world.

Woof!
