Greetings!
For those of you who have been waiting with bated breath for your monthly edition of Wag Talk and have been wondering about its absence, our sincerest apologies! We've been hard at work on our brand new website which is now, after two months of designing, coding and building, finally launched! Read all about it below and then head to www.wagzone.ca and set up your own online account so you can take advantage of all that the site now offers our valued clients!
With spring now here, change has been in the air, and one sad change came in the form of the passing of one of our dearest clients. This month in Pup Smarts, we bid a fond farewell to our Huxley and explore how grief can affect our four-legged friends as much as it can affect us humans.
Finally, for those of you not on packages - or those of you on packages with questions - we have a rundown of everything you need to know about our cost-saving plans in Heard at the Hydrant.

Pup Smarts: Helping Your Dog Say Goodbye
This past month Wag Zone lost one of its oldest and dearest
friends when our sweet Huxley Pritchard passed away surrounded by his loving
human parents and fellow poodle brother, Fergus. It's hard to lose a pet client. It's the worst thing about working
in this business. We see some of our four-legged friends every day and they
leave an indelible mark on our hearts - we come to love many as if they were
our own. Fergus and Huxley in particular have impacted us tremendously. Fergus and Huxley have been daily regulars at Wag Zone since
before it was Wag Zone, since way before any of us - even Shelley - have worked
here. We long knew this day was coming when we would have to bid farewell to
one of our 'boys'. Huxley's passing came as no surprise, given how his body had
slowly been robbed of its strength despite the fortitude of his spirit. But in
spite of that, the loss still hit each of us here at Wag Zone hard. As we
processed our own sadness, we were most concerned for Fergus, his twin brother,
who never strayed far from Huxley's side no matter how incapacitated he became.
How would Fergus manage solo? Initially, Fergus was a trooper, coming 'alive' in his own
way. Able to be more active than before, when his sole mission was to keep his
virtually bed-ridden companion company, Fergus flourished, mingling with the pack
and even chasing balls. Then within a few days Fergus wasn't eating so well,
his mom said, he seemed a bit lethargic. The grief had finally crept in. Some are surprised when they hear that dogs can grieve, but
it is not uncommon. There's no way of knowing what dogs understand about death,
but many dog lovers have experienced a dog who became lethargic, upset, or even
ill after a dog companion dies. This can naturally compound the grief in the
family at large. It's heartbreaking, especially when you are trying to process
the loss yourself. Grieving dogs can become withdrawn and stop eating or they
can also become clingy. Not only are they feeling the loss, they are trying to come
to terms with their new place in the pack. Distraction is a powerful ally when helping your pet process
grief. Bringing your dog with you on outings - even if just to keep you company
in the car - can help lift your pet's mood. Lots of loving affection, walks and
playtime not only deepen your bond with your dog, they also make life more
interesting for your pet. Then, it simply takes time, just as it does with we
two-legged creatures. If distraction and attention do not seem to lift your pet
from the depression - especially if he or she continues to not eat - a visit to
the vet may be in order. Anti-depressants can be helpful for the hardest hit
pups. Replacing the passed pet may or may not be the best thing
for the family and for the grieving dog. Sometimes it's best to let everyone
get through the tough bits before bringing a new pet into the environment. Then
again, sometimes that form of happy distraction can be sufficiently uplifting to
move that sense of loss into a place of fond memory. It's an individual choice
that only each family can make for themselves. As for Fergus? He's doing much better. He's still not 100%
himself yet, but he certainly relishes his daily Wag Zone fun and is quite happy to
be spoiled rotten with all our head scritches and wrassles. And it helps that
his people are committed to ensuring his life is as full of love and happiness
as can possibly be. Fergus and Huxley are, and have always been, lucky, lucky dogs.

Heard at the Hydrant: Packages and Avoiding Tickets
All About Package Plans: Q & A Why should I consider
purchasing a package? If your pup is a regular visitor to Wag Zone, packages are a
great way for you to maximize savings. Buy nine days, get one free. Buy 17 days,
get three free. What packages do you
offer and how much do they cost?Packages are designed to offer you savings on the length of
day you typically use: 10-Packs
Regular Days (6-9 hours) - $270 Half Days (4-6
hours) - $225 Long Days (9+
hours) - $306 20-Packs Full Days (6-9 hours) - $510 Long Days (9+
hours) - $578
How long do packages
remain valid?Packages have no expiration date. However, if your pet hasn't
visited Wag Zone in several years, we may require an additional 'interview' to
ensure they are still pack friendly before accepting them back into the pack. Which package should
I choose? If your pup likes to enjoy shorter visits, then a 4-6 hour package is the one for you. If you work long shifts and prefer your pup to play
all day, then opting for a 9+ hour package will eliminate overtime fees. What if my pup stays
longer than my package type?If your dog is on a 6-9 hour package and you pick him up
after 10 hours of play, you will be charged an overtime fee of $4 plus taxes.
If your dog is on a 4-6 hour plan, the overtime fee will range from $4 if the
stay is shorter than 9 hours and $8 if the stay is over 9 hours. What if my dog only
stays for a couple of hours? Can you reduce my package by a half day?Unfortunately no. Packages can only be reduced in full-day
increments. You can opt to pay the regular daycare charges for a short day and leave
your package days unchanged or you can simply use up a full package day. Just
let us know your preference when you pick your dog up. Can I cancel my
package? No, packages are non-refundable except in the event a dog is
expelled at Wag Zone's discretion. I have two dogs. Can
I buy one package for them to share?Packages are non-transferable and can only apply to one
dog. If you also purchase a package for your second dog, however, you
will be able to enjoy an additional 10% discount on that package's cost. How can I tell how
many package days my dog has remaining? Our new online system makes it easy to track your pet's
visits, reservations and remaining package days. Simply activate your online account and you will be able to view your pet's personalized calendar showing past
visits, future reservations and the number of visits still available on your
package. You can also ask a Wag Zone representative and we can
tell you how many days you have left. Don't Get a Ticket! We'd like to remind our clients that dogs should be on leash when being dropped off or picked up from Wag Zone. We have had two clients in recent weeks who had the misfortune of receiving $100+ tickets when their off-leash dogs decided to wander beyond Wag Zone's property line (the faded white parking line) while being dropped off. Most of our dogs associate the Animal Shelter with the fun of our afternoon outdoor playtimes and can quickly trot off in that direction - into the waiting arms of our friendly neighborhood by-law officers. |
