Greetings!

Okay, so Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow and returned to his burrow, but we can still hope can't we? Surely spring is just around the corner despite the reticence of one over-hyped groundhog? Here's hoping that the snow and cold are for the most part behind us. To shake off those winter blues, come join us as Wag Zone hosts its first seminar, AnimalTalk Access, presented by Full Circle. Learn all about it below!
In The 'Zone... AnimalTalk Access Seminar

AnimalTalk AccessComing to Wag Zone February 28 and March 1, Full Circle's AnimalTalk Access Seminar will teach you techniques that can have a significant and positive impact on your pet's health.

This one and a half-day seminar is is designed to be used by any layperson or health care provider to bring about significant improvement in any animal's health using five simple techniques and a Fast Aid Procedure:

Cortices
The Cortices technique is designed to improve and balance the communication between the two halves of your pet's brain. (It's like hitting the reset button on the brain's computer.) This will improve the efficiency of the brain, thereby improving overall health in the animal. Specific immediate effects include improvement in thinking ability, memory, concentration, stress reduction, feelings of well-being, and general physiological functioning of the body.

SB Junction
The Spheno-Basilar Junction technique is designed to release the SB of the animal. Your dog's breath scans the frequencies of the body and allows for the brain to determine what frequencies need to be addressed; it is important that the juncture be mobile. Animals with a restricted SB may exhibit dizziness, 'foggy' head, difficulty maintaining balance, general body weakness, bleeding from ears, poor memory, tension headaches, depression, endocrine and digestive system disorders.

Hydration
Your dog's body is 70-80% water. All physiological processes in the cells, nerves, organs, and other structures are dependent upon a good supply of water. Very often the transportation of water across the cell membranes is compromised. The Hydration technique helps to correct your pet's body's ability to fully utilize the water it has available, thereby greatly improving the efficiency of all physiological processes

Body Chemistry
This technique is designed to stimulate the immune system into addressing many chronic and acute conditions. Often viruses, bacteria, parasites, allergies, food intolerance, and accumulated toxins are not effectively addressed by the immune system because of various imbalances in the animal's body. This technique can correct these imbalances so that your dog's body can then restore health without the need for drug intervention.

Reciprocals
The integrity of the structure of a dog's body is critical to him or her living a healthy and mobile life. The coordination of the muscles, balance of the muscle tone, and the unrestricted flow of energy through his or her body are all critical to healthy functioning at all levels of the body/mind complex. The Reciprocals technique re-establishes the integrity of the structures of your dog's body and can have significant effect on many forms of injuries, arthritis, circulatory issues, co-ordination patterns, spinal problems, etc.

Fast Aid Techniques
AnimalTalk Access also includes an effective "Fast Aid" system that is non-invasive, safe, and very simple. It will resolve simple issues as a standalone technique. In serious conditions it is designed to be used safely until specialized veterinary care is available.

Pup Smarts: Salmonella and Your Dog

sickdogUnfortunately, the peanut butter recall has reached the realm of pet food. While the peanut butter recall in the U.S. does not affect plain old peanut butter itself, it does affect peanut butter paste that is used by manufacturers to produce cookies, crackers and, unfortunately, dog biscuits.

Dog Biscuit Recall
The pet food recall affects Grreat Choice Dog Biscuits, a store-brand peanut butter-flavored product by PetSmart, sold between August 21, 2008 and January 19, 2009:
  • Small Assorted 32 oz., UPC 73725702900
  • Small/Medium Assorted 4 lb., UPC 73725700601
  • Small/Medium Assorted 8 lb., UPC 73725700605
  • Small/Medium Assorted 10 lb., UPC 73725702755
  • Large Assorted 8 lb., UPC 73725700638
  • Extra Large Assorted 8 lb., UPC 73725700779
  • Peanut Butter 4 lb., UPC 73725700766
While no other company has initiated a pet food recall yet, it might be a good idea to consult with your pet store or veterinarian if you have any other peanut butter-flavored dog biscuits. Better safe than sorry!

Salmonella Symptoms
Given this latest recall, you may find yourself concerned that your pet may have been infected with the salmonella bacteria. Keep in mind that a dog's digestive system is significantly different from a human's. The levels of acidity in their stomachs, the length of their digestive tract and how dogs digest food actually reduce the risk of becoming infected with salmonellosis. That said, infection is still possible so it's good to know what symptoms to be on the lookout for.

A combination of the following symptoms generally arises about 72 hours after exposure. While there a number of different symptoms may appear, digestive upset is almost always present.
  • Vomiting (often with blood in the vomit)
  • Diarrhea (often with blood present)
  • Fever
  • A refusal to eat
  • Gurgling and bubbling sounds in the abdomen
  • Lethargy
  • Dehydration, often severe
  • Drooling and panting (often a sign of nausea and/or pain in dogs and cats)
In rare instances, dogs and cats can experience symptoms such as arthritis-like joint pain and stiffness, straining and frequent urination, and redness and swelling around the eyes.

Treatment for Salmonella in Pets
In most cases, the symptoms of salmonellosis will disappear with little intervention within about one week. However, the greatest danger is that the pet may become dangerously dehydrated within that time.

Treatment may include nutritional supplementation and subcutaneous or intravenous fluid injections, and if a secondary infection has occurred, oral antibiotics may also be prescribed.

Most dogs are generally healthy and will survive salmonella infection without any long-term effects, but as with any illness, the chronically ill, very young or very old pets are at the greatest risk.

Following the 24-hour rule is the best plan of attack when determining whether or not to seek veterinary care. If your pet is vomiting or exhibiting any of the other symptoms, he or she should be showing improvement within 24 hours and should not be worsening after 18 hours. If your pet is getting worse or not improving, contact your veterinarian.

Dog to Human Transmission
Finally, salmonella is one of the few illnesses that can easily be transmitted between species. Because of this, it is critical that if your pet is showing any of the symptoms that you immediately dispose of any feces and wash your hands carefully and consistently to reduce the risk of spreading the disease to other pets or people in your household.
