Stay Tuned for a new, streamlined Time Well Spent Website in 2010!
 It's underway at
Hello ~

February! Brrrrrrrr. At least it's a short month!

In case you missed it, I've vowed  to
create the physical space this year to support my work at Time Well Spent, focused on helping you help yourself, those in need and the environment.

While the DeClutter For Good drives are great, I can't keep doing them without the center-based business structure to support that charitable activity. Plus, there's a lot more good that will be done at the center, with all activities contributing to the mission.

Like what? This month's e-newsletter includes the final installment of the tour of the space. Check it out below to find out what the final area, the Common Ground, is all about and find links to info about the other key areas within TWS.

Given the goal of a finished usable space, here's my "Catch 22" ~ It's tough to build out a space without funds. It's tough to generate funds without the space to do the revenue- generating activities. Simplified: It takes money to make money.

To add a bit more to the challenge: Getting funds in the best of times is, well, tough. Getting them during "these economic times" is really tough. And, getting them to seed fund a low-profit, mission-driven business model for an untested idea ~ the toughest.

So, I warned you last month I might need help...

No, I'm not asking for money. (Phew, right?)
What I need from you won't cost a penny. Good so far... I'm just giving you a Heads Up that I'm going to need support like never before, for the entire month of March, just a few minutes at a time. Okay. Here's why...

I've put the Time Well Spent concept into the application pool for the Pepsi REFRESH Project to fund the build-out of a space for Time Well Spent. That's right, just get enough votes and I'll have the funds needed to build out the space. And, I'm only going up against several hundred other well-intended ideas.

Am I crazy? Just crazy enough that I might make this work!  ; )

As part of the $2oMillion PEPSI is awarding, they are giving 10 $50,000 grants each month. Winners are chosen by vote count. So, it's "Get out the Vote - Internet-Style." I've been involved in voting efforts before, but never one like this and never one that everyone can agree on!

Want to be part of a feel-good movement and know you helped to make Time Well Spent a reality? Just think: Contributing just a small amount of your time each day to help Time Well Spent win the funding dollars needed and knowing you helped to make it happen... That's a lot of impact for a few minutes of your time each day for one month!

So, stay warm for the rest of February and think about helping out for just a couple of minutes a day in March. Details will surely follow!

Heartfelt Thanks & Carpe Diem ~

How I Spent my Time Well  ~ JAN Hilites

My action-while-planning approach to the pre-launch continues to be incredibly worthwhile. I'm confident the connections I'm making with like-minded, mission-driven individuals will strengthen the Time Well Spent business model.  And, it's just great meeting such amazing people, including the following 5 women:

Teleconferenced with Anne Wunderli, Pine Street Inn and Social Enterprise Alliance Board Member, and other members of the organizing committee about the SEA Mass. Chapter Launch Event we have planned for the newly-organized chapter that I am honored to be involved with. The event is scheduled for the evening of March 2nd at Microsoft's New England Research & Development Center in Cambridge, overlooking the Charles River and the Boston Skyline.

Attended Social Changeup 2 at the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge ~ a Twitter-driven meetup for social changemakers in greater Boston, organized by Jeanne Dasaro and Lex Schroeder, founders of The New Prosperity Initiative, a fabulous, young, new media organization on the rise, using the latest in media to highlight organizations and events  that help turn poverty into prosperity.

Provided feedback on Siiri Morley's business plan over a cup of organic tea at Clear Conscious Cafe in Cambridge. Siiri's another social entrepreneur also working hard, along with her business partners, to get her concept launched ~ Prosperity Candle!

Started working with Attorney Jessica Manganello of New Leaf Legal, LLC on my trademark requirements, with plans to research whether an exciting new legal business structure, the L3C, might be the best fit for Time Well Spent.

"Touring" Time Well Spent  ~ The Common Ground

Time Well Spent is designed as a multi-use center for collaboration and creativity, an inspiring place where our collective clutter is repurposed even as we find a renewed sense of purpose in our own lives.  It's a comprehensive and original concept, so a great deal to take in, admittedly...

In an effort to break it down and provide details a little at a time, I'm using the e-newsletter to focus on one area each month, giving a brief overview and directing readers to posts and webpages with more details. This month, we've (finally) reached the last stop on the "tour:"

The Common Ground

Connecting the different work areas at Time Well Spent will be the Common Ground. Open to the public, the Common Ground will be the main retail component of Time Well Spent (though retail merchandise will be displayed throughout the entire center serving as both decoration and inspiration). The sale of quality products and merchandise will provide an important stream of income, necessary to the financial-self-sustaining mission. Local artists, artisans and creatives, take note: Consignment sales of the works of local eco-artists will be a big part of the sales plan.
