Greetings!

A large group of Y supporters gathered together in the rotunda at the Roundhouse in Santa Fe on February 16th to celebrate YMCA Day.  Together with the Family YMCA in Los Alamos, a state alliance has been created to bring strength to the YMCA voice and call to action.  Judy Barrett Miller, Y USA Government Relations/Public Policy Director also joined the event to support the state alliance.

YMCA Youth and Government Governor, Sarah Kiricon, a student at Sandia High School, gave a moving and informative speech as she introduced The Governor of New Mexico, Susanna Martinez.  Michael Horanburg, a member of the Youth and Government Alumni group is actively involved in local politics and was able to use his connections to secure her appearance at the event.  Governor Martinez read the Governor's Proclamation and shared her own love of the Y as a young person. She was so impressed with the students she invited them to her offices and took pictures with the young people. Josh, a student from the Y's after school program at Grant Middle School was thrilled with the opportunity, "I never dreamed I'd be in her office much less taking a picture with her! This was a great experience."

Senator Jerry Ortiz Y Pino, a longtime advocate of the Y, read the proclamation in the Senate as well as introducing both student Youth and Government Officers who serve as Speaker of the House and Attorney General. "To be introduced in the Senate... what a life changer!, " Said Amanda Romero.

Representative Jeannette Wallace read the proclamation in the House.  President and CEO of the YMCA of Central New Mexico, Doug Nakashima, thrilled with the success of the day said "The best YMCA Day in our history!"

Y Corporate Board Members Bill Johnson and Rob Maruca completed their Y day with a visit to the Santa Fe YMCA Child Care Center for a tour of the new building. Truly a day of pride and celebration of the Y's Mission to advocate for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
